It seems apparent that JHM has left the pipe making business. I could
be mistaken about this, if so please let me know because I would
prefer to be mistaken.

I don't know where John is or what he's doing. I do feel that the
craft has suffered a loss for his (apparent) leaving the business.
John and I were never close friends, and had different views on many
things, but I learned an enormous amount about pipe aesthetics from
studying John's work.

If you're out there JHM, drag yourself back here, you're missed!

Gotta wonder too, random. Always enjoyed looking at John's work,
remember the flame war with him & Freddy, only real problem I
had....following the links on his site....all that "bouncing" around,
but finally just learned to be a wee bit patient!

Yes Random, I wonder about him and also Walt Cannoy. Two talented
pipemakers. Another is Robert Threeton. Robert didn't make a lot but he
did quality work. Mary

remember Bob Vacher, who I believe is still in the business but has
been quiet for some time ASP-wise.

When I read the discussions where folks are saying that a $40 pipe is
all they'll ever buy, I think about guys like JHM, wonder who'll be
next. No, not saying everybody needs to spend big bucks on pipes,
just that the hobby seems to breathe sort of, sometimes seeming like
its shrinking and other times seeming like it's expanding, every time
it seems like it's shrinking maybe another maker goes under. I've
probably deleted half a dozen pipemaker links from my browser over the
past year or so because their sites have disappeared, guys whose sites
I read about here or stumbled onto. No doubt about it, it's a tough
business.

I'm gonna miss seeing JHM's pipes. Cannoy? I dunno, I just shake my
head and shrug my shoulders... I think he's as likely as not to have a
table at Chicago, just no telling what's going on there; I hope
wherever Walt is he's getting over whatever was beating him up.

Bah, I'm getting maudlin here, that's no good! <g>

Just another guy who seems to have decided it was pretty much fair game to
burn every bridge he crossed.

Would you care to expand upon that? All I know is that his site seems
to have gone away and he's been absent. For all the facts I have he
could be comatose in a hospital someplace.

Now as to burning bridges in general... that's not always a bad thing
since it ensures you will not go back that way. I made sure to burn
the bridge I took out of my job with one of the big software companies
because I knew that I didn't want to go back and I also knew that at
some point in time I'd be hungry enough to go back anyway. In fact I
tend to avoid crossing bridges that I'm not willing to burn, there may
be some nutjob pyromaniac following me around burning them when I'm
not looking. <g>

As regards JHM, I haven't heard a word that he did anyone wrong, he
just seems to have taken a powder. But there could be lots of folks
who know lots more about it than me.

Hey Random,
You could always get a character reference on him from Freddy Vegas.
But, I would prefer that you wait until you are sure that he's dead as
it will tie up the threads for a few weeks.

Ed

I have been told that John McGrath is doing just fine. His pipes are a
valued part of my collection and I hope that he returns to his craft
soon.

If they were to meet up, there would be "running" involved, that much
is for sure.

I heard from a reliable source that John lost his apartment. Don't know
where he would up but I really enjoyed our conversations. I got to know him
for a while and made some tools for him and sent him tobacco. He was a
really nice guy but ran his life sort of loosely.

Nah. Freddy hasn't been posting much, but I have corresponded with him a
few times, and he is still there. And he is still Freddy... ;-)

JHM has disappeared completely... And I am concerned for him...
