I don't know where John is or what he's doing. I do feel that the
craft has suffered a loss for his (apparent) leaving the business.
John and I were never close friends, and had different views on many
things, but I learned an enormous amount about pipe aesthetics from
studying John's work.
If you're out there JHM, drag yourself back here, you're missed!
Ed Duncan, Batavia, NY
Yes Random, I wonder about him and also Walt Cannoy. Two talented
pipemakers. Another is Robert Threeton. Robert didn't make a lot but he
did quality work. Mary
I don't remember Robert Threeton, maybe "before my time". I do
remember Bob Vacher, who I believe is still in the business but has
been quiet for some time ASP-wise.
When I read the discussions where folks are saying that a $40 pipe is
all they'll ever buy, I think about guys like JHM, wonder who'll be
next. No, not saying everybody needs to spend big bucks on pipes,
just that the hobby seems to breathe sort of, sometimes seeming like
its shrinking and other times seeming like it's expanding, every time
it seems like it's shrinking maybe another maker goes under. I've
probably deleted half a dozen pipemaker links from my browser over the
past year or so because their sites have disappeared, guys whose sites
I read about here or stumbled onto. No doubt about it, it's a tough
business.
I'm gonna miss seeing JHM's pipes. Cannoy? I dunno, I just shake my
head and shrug my shoulders... I think he's as likely as not to have a
table at Chicago, just no telling what's going on there; I hope
wherever Walt is he's getting over whatever was beating him up.
Bah, I'm getting maudlin here, that's no good! <g>

Would you care to expand upon that? All I know is that his site seems
to have gone away and he's been absent. For all the facts I have he
could be comatose in a hospital someplace.
Now as to burning bridges in general... that's not always a bad thing
since it ensures you will not go back that way. I made sure to burn
the bridge I took out of my job with one of the big software companies
because I knew that I didn't want to go back and I also knew that at
some point in time I'd be hungry enough to go back anyway. In fact I
tend to avoid crossing bridges that I'm not willing to burn, there may
be some nutjob pyromaniac following me around burning them when I'm
not looking. <g>
As regards JHM, I haven't heard a word that he did anyone wrong, he
just seems to have taken a powder. But there could be lots of folks
who know lots more about it than me.
Nope

LOL! Speakin' of Freddy, I haven't seen him posting lately, you don't
suppose the two of them ran off together? <bseg>
Nah. Freddy hasn't been posting much, but I have corresponded with him a
few times, and he is still there. And he is still Freddy... ;-)
JHM has disappeared completely... And I am concerned for him...
