I'm posting this as a public service.
I needed to replace a broken mortise on a meerschaum pipe, and it took
some looking to find a source. A number of retail stores - both local
and some of the large inet stores didn't stock them. Some people
recommended sending the pipe in to a repair expert - an expensive
solution for a cheap, easy to fix problem. Not to mention that it
offends me to spend money to fix something that I can easily do.
Since Google indexes these posts, the next person who needs this
information will be a step ahead if they think to look here. (I did,
and didn't find anything). I will put keywords at the bottom that I
think will help a future search.
My source was
listed under accessories.
I own about 6 or 8 meers, and I occasionally need a replacement of one
side or the other. I purchased a dozen pairs - presumably a lifetime
supply, only a few dollars.
(These are the same people who import SMS meerschaum pipes -

As an aside, I have found that the most frequent place for a break is
the collar around the mortise. I have taken to lightly sanding the
tenon (very fine paper, not much stock removed) to slightly reduce the
strain when removing or inserting the stem tenon into the bit mortise.
Tenon is then coated with graphite.
Other keywords:
delrin, teflon, meerschaum, repair, replace, joint, attachment, stem,
bit, shank. Add any others as you think will help.
Try Tim West at www.jhlowe.com. He has a pretty good selection of
repair parts. heck of a nice guy too.

That sounds like something that can be tried with little expense and
little danger. I think you might be on to something.

The fix isn't permanent, but close enough. The fitting can still be
unscrewed with some force, but is less likely to unscrew by itself.
I second beeswax and it doesn't take very much either and is easily
removed. Works well to tighten and seal and to loosen squeeky tight,
hard to remove stems.
