Holmes preferred the shag cut tobacco smoked by the working man,
Watson enjoyed Schippers.

Holmes liked cheap black shag, and Watson smoked a cheap plug known as
"ship's". He seems to have migrated to The Arcadia after a while,
which is a reference to My Lady Nicotine, believe it or not. ACD and
JMB were friends. Arcadia in real life was Craven Mixture.

Holmes smoked a cheap black shag, and smoked the dottles after
airing them out on the mantle. Watson smoked Ship's, belived to be
Schipper's.
He moved up to an Arcadia blend ,Holmes noticed the ash on Watson's
coat after returning from playing billiards.

I echo everyone else's answer in that Holmes preferred Black Shag,
while Watson preffered his Arcadia Mixture (Cravens). A bit of an
obvious answer to the question, but fun to discuss nonetheless. Has
anyone on here tried McClelland's Arcadia or Black Shag mixtures from
the 221b series? I have a couple of tins from 2005 of Arcadia sitting
in the cellar, ready to be smoked one day while watching the Jeremy
Brett Series. This brings up another topic of interest. I know that
Basil Rathbone enjoyed Pipeworks & Wilke's "Rumcake" mixture, as is
stated on vtpipes.com under the mixture's description. Does anyone
know what other famous Sherlock Holmes/Watson actors enjoyed smoking?
Nigel Bruce? Jeremy Brett? Edward Hardwicke?

There's a Hitchcock film called Suspicion, in which Nigel Bruce smokes
a pipe in a few scenes. He looks like a natural at it.

Nigel Bruce was a confirmed pipe smoker and usually used a pipe in all
of his movies.
Donald Crisp is another true pipe smoking actor.
Charles martin Smith is another who includeds pipes in his
characterations,
he was the accountant in The Untouchables.

McClellands Arcadia, while not a bad blendIMHO, does not even come close to
Craven (which I miss a lot). Black Shag is not one I care for, and is not
strong at all, only acrid. A closer approximation to Holmes' shag would be
Dark Birdseye or Kendal Dark from Gawith, Hoggarth & Co. Both are dark and
strong shags.
