Hi ASP,

I currently smoke a pipe outside my house. My other hobby is teaching
chess. However, there are no other chess players that also smoke a
pipe in my neck of the woods. However, I truly think that chess or
checkers are great games to smoke a pipe while enjoying the company of
a good friend. What other hobbies or activities are there that might
lend themselves to the pipe?

Whittling? My grandfather used to whittle while chewing. I had a lot of
fun while whittling my self a tamper/pick one day. It doesn't look like
much, but for function can hardly be beat. It has two ends, one flat,
one pointed :)

You know another use for that Whittler's knife is to whittle slices
off of a plug tobacco like Cannon plug or Wessex Gold Brick.

"Shut The Box" is a fun dice game and easy to learn. You can make it a
light gambling game with dollar bets and pick up a few buck from your
buddies. Check out the link below.

Hi,
Dominos is good, I've thrown the bones for a long time now. But, Darts
is IMHO the best. Played in bars world wide, and bars = smoking. Steel
tip is the best, but bars with real dart boards are getting harder to
find. I don't like the plastic/electronic boards but it will do in a
pinch. The cost to start up is small, maybe $25 to $30 for a good set.
Plus if you travel you can take your hobby with you.

I'll agree with the darts (and all of the observations about steel tip
vs. plastic tip electronic darts...steel tips and bristle boards rule).
And I'll add pool/billiards, reading, writing, playing stringed
instruments (as long as you're not trying to sing and clench at the same
time), daydreaming, cloud watching, girl watching, dog walking...the
pipe lends a pleasant note to all of these activities.

I'll second dominoes, though played Miami style it can't get a bit
physical ;-)

Greetings and Salutations from a pipe smoking fisherman,
Fishing and pipe smoking go together like peanut butter & jelly, Gin &
Tonic or Haddo's in a Tinsky . . . .
I enjoy smoking my pipe flyfishing as well as on a bass boat. Nothing
like a great day on the water, the sun is out, there is magic in the
air, and the fish are on top!

One word of advice . . . . .
Pipes do not float! I learned the hard way?!? Leave the nice pipes
at home . . . Yep you look way cool throwing Royal Wulffs on your
Loomis 6 weight for old brownie and life is good until (GULP!) your
sweetest Castello G 65 goes caterwauling into "Old Man River" (never
to be seen again). Disaster!
Nevermind . . . . .

Then again, watercoloring is a decent option. YMMV.

What sort of painting did you have in mind?

Drawing suits me better. Pencils or charcoal or even pastel crayons
don't smell, so they would all work quite well. Then again, fixating
the whole thing would have to wait until I'm through smoking ...

> model building,

Ah, the smell of glue ...

> model railroading

I've never done that, but it does look like a lot of fun. Too bad it is
quite expensive and requires space I don't have ...

If I would have the money as well as the space, I guess I'd go for it,
and combine it with growing bonsai-trees. Should make for some nice
scenery, at least ;-)

> I always smoke my pipes while on the computer.

That works wonderfully.

Actually, I shouldn't be saying much, since I smoke a pipe while doing
the dishes or working in the garden.

Cheers!

It's gotta be fishing, specifically bass fishing the Charlie Brewer
way.

Charle Brewer was a ledgendary bass fisherman. He created a relaxing
bass fishing method to go with his pipe smoking. Or, maybe it was the
other way around. His way of bass fishing is very simple and requires
little in the way of sophisticated equipment you see in the arsenal of
today's harried tournament angler. His method uses only light spinning
tackle and diminutive four inch straight tailed plastic worms rigged
on specially designed jig heads. When fishing the little worms his way
you don't impart any action to the worm aside from an easy lift of the
rod tip or a gentle retrieve. Believe me this in an effective way to
fish. It's almost as if his method came about as a way to retrieve a
bait without spilling hot ashes. I'm not kidding. It's a nearly
effortless technique that I would suggest any angler investigate.
There's no thrashing about to deliver that fly to an exact location,
lol. Of course there will be no bass aggressively busting your top
water bait but you will catch numbers of bass.

I think the best ways to enjoy a pipe are, in no particular order:

1) Chatting with friends
2) Playing chess
3) Fishing
4) Reading a book
5) Cow watching and the like.

I find that bird watching/feeding is a great way to spend time during
an outdoor smoke. Pipe in one hand, binoculars in the other. Also, I
like to smoke while doing the chores of birding. Filling feeders,
cleaning sparrow nests out of bluebird houses etc. It's a hobby that
can be very simple or elaborate, just like smoking a pipe.

Hi GPW

Reading a paper/magazine/book can hardly be beaten. I also enjoy doing
nothing at all, while smoking and drinking tea or some beverage. I
find there's enough in a pipe to keep most of your senses entertained.
Of course, a good conversation with a friend is also excellent, but
sometimes hard to come by.

Ever play chess online, on the free chess server? I can give you a link
if you need one. I used to play online some (you need to download a small
program to play on) but everyone always beat me so I quit(!). You can also
be an observer, and sometimes some of the world class chess masters play
there (it's been reputed that Bobby F. used to show up there from time to
time, under an alias of course, but people who knew his style of play said
they could tell it was him...). I haven't logged on in years, even to
observe, but I expect the server is still running.

For me it's working on my Tampers. Love the fact my hands are free to
carve or sand the Antler Tines. As long as my hands are busy I'm in
heaven!

I'm sure someone has jumped on this suggestion but Fishing especially
Fly Fishing, Camping, anything outdoors other then maybe climbing
Mount Everest that is?

Also, I personally enjoy taking the grandkids and Bassets out for a
"Drag me down the street" in the evening with a good pipe! Then of
course there's my favorite hobby sitting on the front porch during a
heavy Thunder Storm! Best pipe smoking there is!

All my best and God bless

I'd have to agree with Alan, that at the end of the day before or
after dinner a pipe while doing nothing in particular is extremele
rewarding. Otherwise its reading the Guardian (great newspaper) while
slowly smoking a bowl, it comes once a week and it can be read in
parts to space it out over the next week (esp when Le Monde
Diplomatique) comes too! Regards

Sometimes I'll buy a cheap snack I think is diabetically safe, find out
it's got MSG, then I'll give it to the birds & the squirrels in front
