Recently ordered a Jobey Oom Paul Sunburst pipe. Anxiously awaiting delivery today. However, I didn't spot the famous/infamous Jobey Link before the purchase. Anyhoo, do the gentlemen here have an opinion of Jobey pipes regarding the link and smokeability...good, bad, and ugly opinions welcomed.

Machine made and cheaply finished upper end basket grade pipe. You get what you pay for when purchasing pipes in the category that Jobeys fall into. Someday people will realize that when your first criteria when shopping is price you will drastically hinder any other criteria you want to use.

It sounds like it is way to late for you to change your mind but next time step up about 3 levels of quality and look at Rossi and/or some of the lower priced Savinelli line of pipes. You'll be very close to the same price criteria vs Jobey but you will be far above the quality you get in regards to Jobeys.

I beg to differ.
I have a Jobey Sunburst, a Shelmoor, two Stromboli's and a Band.
They all smoke very well, still after 25 years of use. In fact, the Sunburst
is one of my favorites.

It doesn't matter what you spend on a pipe if you enjoy it.
As for the Jobey link, a little extra cleaning and they are fine.

There are no major problems with Jobey pipes. I have many friends that have them and have been smoking them for years. I have about 4 myself. Good smoke. People are quick to criticize pipes that they no nothing about for the most part, mine are old, could not tell you the model, etc., and I smoke them regularly. A lot of people damn Graybow, but Graybow continues to manufacture pipes at a reasonable price and are the largest consumers of briar in the pipe business. Jobey does not equate to Graybow, they are much better. Gods forbid, they have been in business for years and making bad pipes would mean they would be out of business quickly.

I have never had a problem with a Jobey, I think that the link is a brilliant idea. If the tenon is broken you can just get a new link and voila.

Received my Jobey pipe on Dec 3rd. I've smoked an average of 10 bowls per day with the pipe each day. I have now formed an initial impression of the pipe, although I won't have a full impression until it is fully broken in, which won't occur until it's first reaming.

First the pipe. It was not an Oom Paul shape as advertised but was instead a 3/4 bent shape. It has a generous sized bowl equivalent to my Savinelli 614 Dry System Oom Paul. The briar of the Jobey was denser than the Savinelli as evidence by the weight difference. The Jobey weighed 55 grams while the Savinelli weighed 49 grams.

For personal preference, I re-bent and sanded the mouthpiece to hang at the right angle and fit my teeth. It's a great clencher now.

Right from the git go, the Jobey smoked cool and the break in tobacco (PA & SWR) flavors really came through. OTOH, the pipe was a gurgler. The gurgling was traceable to the Jobey link which is an insert with the smooth half of the insert inserted into the stem and the threaded end forming the tenon which is screwed into the mortise. The Jobey link had too small of an airway and was a tad long, partially blocking the airway from the chamber. So I shortened the link a tad and taper drilled and opened up the link. Gurgling solved! This is something I do with all my pipes with push tenon stems, they all gurgle for me.

So now I have cool smoking, non-gurgling pipe that is a great clencher. Not bad for a $49.00 investment (with free shipping). Couldn't be happier with my purchase.
