I have images of the posters on ASP. Now some of the images are due
to their use of pictures on other boards as their avatars. Some of
them are just exist in my mind from the nature of their postings. For
some reason I see Ed D. in my mind with hair a little shaggy, but now
requiring sun screen on the top during summer, as his forehead
grows. I don't remember him mentioning his dog's breed, but I somehow
associate him with a lab or possibly an Irish setter. A friendly lick
you face off and beat you to death with its tail dog. I can't quite
figure if he uses a walking stick or not. Get what I mean? Accurate
or not that picture exists in my mind's eye when i read his posts. I
don't have to guess that Pipemama is lovely on the outside as she is
in her postings, or that Earl (Strongirish) is a sturdy no nonsense
guy, given to plaid shirts. I get to see their pics.

What puzzles me is what does an ugly old troll look like. What kind
of person would get his jollies posting anti-smoking diatribes to a
group of people who he knows don't give a dang about what he has to
say, and he never has any chance of convincing them to alter their
life. Here is someone whose life is so empty that they can only get
attention by taking on the role of being a mosquito buzzing around the
otherwise happy group sitting on the porch on a summers evening.
Irritating, but generally of no consequence.

Now I know that Shrek has given a "pleasant" spin on being a troll,
but this is not how I perceive the particular ones we have to deal
with. These are not just not ugly on the outside, but they are ugly
clean to the bone. Do you see them as the socially inept creatures
who can't manage to match their socks? One I can see as having
homemade tats, probably "love" and "hate" on his knuckles, and
probably has the "Stars & Bars" hanging as a curtain in the 1950s
trailler he calls "home". How do you picture them?

The average Troll, well let's see.

Definately socially inept creatures.

Never had much success with the ladies, probably lived at home with
mum and dad well into his forties, few (or no) friends, doesn't see
members of his family very often, long shaggy (unwashed) hair, poor
dress sense (suit and sandals type of guy) possibly works in IT or
some similar occupation where they don't have to deal with real
people.

Body odour problems, probably vegetarian, sexual preferences include
males, females, dogs, cats, sheep and hampsters.

Did I miss anything?

Gerbils. Booger eaters. Tendency to drool.

Okay, that was probably the best comment of the bunch!

My disagreement would be with anything that would imply creativity or
logic. This type of person is incapable of considering the consequences
of their actions, nor any other type of logical thinking or creative
process. They have no real personality to express, and have so
insignificant a self-worth as to only be able to find any self-value by
inappropriate and arrogant assumption of superiority of everyone who
does not participate in their conformism..

With no intent of insult to the religious faithful, this is the same
type of zealot that burn books, creates suicide bombings, holy wars and
genocide. Their arrogance is supreme. They can't even be considered
ignorant, as the ignorant just don't know. But the truly stupid don't
know, don't want to know and don't care what effect their ignorance may
have on others. They lack even the common intelligence of a lizard.

Even the tattooed gorilla has enough personality and demonstrates enough
self-expression to accept someone for who they are and what they choose
for themselves. They just choose not to be around them. When was the
last time you heard of a biker walking into a gay bar, trying to
convince the patrons their all going to get AIDS, their wieners were
going to fall off and if the didn't leave the place his old lady would
stop giving him BJs?

Don't get it wrong, but these trolls are religious fanatics. Just that
their religion demands conformity in choices of consumption. They
consider themselves morally superior because they make one healthy
choice for themselves you don't.

Even a totally brainwashed Muslim nut-case doesn't want to see people
die just for eating pork. And don't doubt for a second that these trolls
would not at least toast the occasion if five of us fell over dead.
After all, we're evil.

Yeah that's the ticket. One of them I picture as the Rick Moranis
character in Ghost Busters. The type of guy who has to work at
getting his shirt buttoned right, and probably has part of it tucked
in and part of it out. The other one seems like a trailer park type
with a living room curtain made of a Confederate flag, and the words
"love" and "hate" tatooed on his knuckles. The tats being homemade,
possibly done while a resident of the county jail.

Both with very low self-esteem, or they would find a way to have
positive social relationships, instead of constantly trying to get
attention by being constant irritants.

yeah the picture is filling in nicely.

Shrek was an Ogre, not a troll, so not really the same. And I don't
agree with the assertion of a troll being the biker with the "love
Hate" tattoos. Those people have a chosen social group and and in
many cases are actually decent people. They, at the very least, have
friends and really don't care enough about what other people do. The
IT geek thing doesn't really work for me either. I realize the
stereotype involved here, but I'm pretty much a geek and I know a lot
of IT people. They are more interested in computers, sci-fi and tech
stuff than they are in other people. This makes them tend to shy away
from confrontation such as what we see in a troll.

I would say they have some sort of low end staff scientist position.
Maybe a degree of some sort in a scientific field but not a masters or
PhD. They have had difficulty getting the "dream job" they always
told people they would have when they graduated and they may tell
people they are a (insert scientific job title here) but in fact make
whatever income they have from working at the local grocery store/
bowling alley. The moderate educational background makes them feel
justified in what they say, that they are somehow an expert, yet their
crappy grades in school and lack of any real ambition makes them a
total idiot.

I have met a few of these people before. In fact, I had to work with
2 of them on a project I was doing with my company. They both thought
they knew everything, but in fact were idiots. One looked, spoke, and
acted just like the comic book store guy in the Simpsons. The other
one was equally odd, but I have yet to find a good comparison. They
were both contract hire archeologists. Neither of them knew the first
thing about archeology and both combined could not dig as well as one
of the smallest girls we had on the project. They spent all of their
time talking about how much they knew and how we should all strive to
be just like them. If I ever wake up and find myself turning into
them, I will eat my gun.

Happy puffing,
Bill D.

Now Jerry, tsk, tsk...

The object of this thought experiment is not reasonableness, it is
imagination. If we think of these people looking like the guy next
door, or any normal person it doesn't work. This is an experiment of
the imagination, of how do you picture them in your minds eye. And my
mind's eye shows them as the abnomal people that their postings show
them to be. So yes I use "stereotypes", because that's why we have
them.

People with any self esteem and intelligence could have normal
relationships with people, and would find a way to "talk to people",
not just talk "at" them, and with either an eye to exchanging
information, or possibly entering into a dialogue that might persuade
them to change their opinion. The board "troll" has a mentality like
the telephone prankster. Their posts are like the anonymous call to
upset some one with "heavy breathing". "Anonymous" prank phone calls
have become a thing of the past, because it is too easy to identify
where the call is coming from, but anonymous postings, or it
equivalent, on open boards is all to easy on the net.

The parallel I made to the biker trailer park boy is not a successful
biker. I have known several of these, and they were generally
personable guys, unless you were in a confrontation over something
that involved what was important to them. They would not hesitate to
face any one mano on mano, and were willing to take a punch as well as
give one. The esence of the troll's way of posting it is essential
that no one can face him or hold him to account to his behavior.

NOw do you really see your Sunday school teacher when one of these
creeps posts? If so I suggest you neeed to change churches.

Also speaking seriously here, sorry.

In this case, this troll, the zealous anti-smoking troll, is usually
an ex-smoker who could only quit by vilifying tobacco to themselves.

Telling yourself you hate tobacco is a valid way to quit but these ex-
smokers have to crusade against it as a substitute for it, and to keep
it completely out of their presence. They are usually the most likely
to come snivelling back to smoking after a time and will then, true to
form, spew venom at anyone reminding them of their tirades.

Ok Piper,
seems to me that a reasonable response to your attempt to degrade a
troll or mark a troll as a less desirable member of our race asks us
to dismiss the fact that in general our way of belief that all have
the right to express discord against any thoughts, either political,
moral, religous type, or even dealing with which road to take thru our
life is given for us to decide without displeasure from a select few.
I don't accept the expressed stands of most trolls, but I sure as heck
accept the trolls as members of our race and their beliefs are valid
to them and many others.

If I may jump in,

All have a right to express their opinions, but not in all ways
in all places. Thousand-watt loudspeakers are generally
prohibited, for example, as is using private property for
exposition, against the wishes of the property owner. "Public
places" such as sidewalks, shopping malls, and a variety of other
places are subject to reasonable restriction. The trolls may
properly be directed to use facilities available specifically for
their use, in a manner that allow others to exercise thier right
to be free of intrusion impairing their pursuit of happiness in
unreasonable manner.

I do accept trolls as members of our race, but given that current
population levels are a major factor in many problems making life
unpleasant or unpromising for mankind, I would be willing to
sacrifice some of them for the betterment of all. Of course, I
can think of others even more deserving (need I mention I support
use of capital punishment for heinous crimes?), but maybe we
could add the trolls to the bottom of the list for eradication
and deal with them in uncompromising fashion should we ever get
that far down the list of priorities?

Cheers!

Well, trolls have become common on the internet for two reasons.

1. A troll can usually find a way to get their messages on, just
signing on as someone else, on another computer, etc.

2. Troll has a dual meaning, a troll is "trolling" for a response, for
a reaction. The anonymity of the internet allows people to do this
safely with no risk to life or limb.

Thus, the proper reaction to a troll is to treat them as a fart in
public, to act as if they don't exist. This seems to be done quite
well here.

Still, to draw a parallel, if a person joined a pipe club and it was
soon evident that they were there to spew anti smoking arguments, they
would be asked to leave. This group is for pipe smokers. The internet
makes it a public thing and opens the door for trolls, but you don't
have to like it.

which suggested the temperature rise of the past 100 years was

I'm so jealous. I have a cell phone, but I absolutely hate it. I
have an aversion to all things technical. I will NEVER own a kindle.
Books are made from paper by God! For a long time I used a legal pad

to the blackberry strictly because my legal pad doesn't beep at me to
remind me of stuff. I pretty forgetful you see. My goal, when I
retire someday, is to ditch the blackberry, the television, and the

A cell phone is very handy for emergency reporting, and when
traveling. (Definition of "operational": "Able to move, shoot,
and communicate." The cell phone enables "communicate," pretty
much anywhere these days.)

Cost is a consideration. Years ago I was paying $15 a month for
a phone that worked on AT&T's TDMA network. The change to GSM
and my wife's decision that convenience when traveling meant she
needed one too have driven the price up almost four-fold.) I
think you can get an inexpensive phone and a plan that lets you
pay by the minute and get by for a reasonble price if you make
few calls.
