today, gone tomorow!
I have had two heart attcks and never knew they were coming!
Oh no. I really liked Bjarne.
I remember once about 5 or 6 years ago he was showing his pipes at
Joyce's shop, Royal Cigar in Atlanta. My wife came in to meet me and
picked up one of his Signature A pipes (~$750 IIRC) and struck a pose
with the pipe stuck in her mouth. Now, you have to know my wife;
she's a sassy, little, cute, Brazilian woman who's used to getting a
lot of attention, particularly from men. She didn't realize how
inappropriote it was to stick a pipe in your mouth that a pipemaker
has on display. Of course, everyone else standing there knew. I
thought this might be an embarrassing moment for her, but Bjarne was
such a gentleman. He just smiled and made a warm comment about how
cute she looked, leaving my wife with all her dignity, never realizing
her little faux-pa (sp?).
Bjarne Nielsen, a gentleman, a good businessman, and a fine pipemaker.
Back before the cigar boom, when I was a budding young tobacconist, I
met Bjarne for the first time as he was tossing a guy out of his
booth. Apparently, this knothead just wanted a price list and did not
want to look at Bjarne's pipes. Bjarne grabbed the guy by the collar
and belt and "helped" him on down the aisle! LOL! I was terrified! He
turned to me and said, "Do YOU want to look at my pipes?" I said,
"Hell yes I do!" Every show afterward I not only bought Bjarne pipes
for the shop but I also bought one for my collection. Once, some years
later, Bjarne and Erik (Nording), drunker than loons, took it upon
themselves to sell me my yearly Bjarne pipe. LOL! I already knew which
one I wanted but they insisted. They picked up every pipe except the
one I wanted! Finally, I said (through all of our laughter), "What
about that one?" Erik and Bjarne threw their hands up, swayed a bit,
and Erik said, "Ah! Saving the best for last! Now where is the box?"
Man what a head ache I had on the flight home that year.

Just like everyone else, I too really liked Bjarne. I met him at a NY
pipe show a couple of years back and drooled over his high grade pipes
immensely while picking each one up a hundred times or so and asked a
ton of questions about them until I finally bought one. He not only
answered everything I asked but did so with a smile. Bjarne will be
greatly missed but never forgotten.

This is really sad to hear. I know a lot of us have met Bjarne at pipe
shows or shops. He was a real gentleman with whom I enjoyed chatting.
I'm going to fire up a Bjarne in his memory.

Prayers and best wishes to his family, friends, and fans. A bowl of
tobacco in his honor! Bjarne, if you can see this, thank you for all
that you have done to promote our hobby and to make it more enjoyable!

Over the last few years, I had the opportunity to get to know Bjarne
from his annual visit to our shop, and being in a booth near his at
Chicago. During last year's visit, we went out for a meal of BBQ, and,
of course, a few beers, and he spent the evening regaling us with the
story of how he wound up as a pipemaker.
During one of his trips, we talked about some of the Scandinavian
companies that were no longer around, and I had mentioned my fondness
for Kriswill. I told Bjarne about a slender pickaxe shape they used to
make that I had owned; a really gorgeous sandblast that met its demise
in the form of a broken shank. He said that he remembered the shape I
was talking about, and we went on to chat about other things.
About 8 weeks later, a package showed up at our shop addressed to me
from Bjarne. He had created his version of that old shape, in one of
the nicest ring grain blasts I've ever seen. That pipe is very special
to me, and is even moreso after reading of this very sad news.
Bjarne was often called the "Ambassador of Pipes" due to his
diplomatic background, and I will certainly miss his visits and
friendship.

That's a very nice story Russ, as well as the other ones that are told
in the thread.
I am really sad about Bjarne's passing. I will cherish even more the
two pipes i have from him. it's a sad day for the pipe community
Yoseph
This is very sad indeed. My thoughts go out to Bjarne's family and
friends...

My next pipe is in Bjarne's honor.
Always sad to lose an artisan and a kind soul,

Dear Friends,
Bjarne's good friend Hans Nielsen ("Former" the master pipe maker)
called with the sad news. Truly a huge loss to the pipe smoking
world...although many great pipe smokers have been called the
'ambassador' of pipes...Bjarne was ultimately the true 'ambassador'
and had the credentials...to prove the point.
I'd see Bjarne at least twice per year and sometimes three...always
found great buys in his hand made pipes...and great friendship in his
charm, hearty hand shake, hug, love for barbecue and beer...
He was supposed to meet Former and I at the Faxe Brewery in Denmark
but had to go to a pipe show in England so I took a 'rain check' that
will have to wait to be cashed...Let this sudden loss remind us
all ...don't take the 'rain check' meet with your friends, pick up
that Bjarne pipe, and smoke a good bowl in his memory.
