Evening ASP:

Picked up a unique and very unusual pipe: a KBB Eagle Claw that dates from the early 1920s and appears to be a carved gutta percha Eagle's claw into which a large briar bowl has been fitted. It's a big bent job, over 10 inches total length. Here's a pic:

Kind of cool looking, reminds me of some meer shapes... don't think it
would fit in my pocket though. <g>

Nice one, John! Yes, I have seen one before, but it was not as large
as this one I believe, nor in as good condition. The one I saw had
damage to the talons, but more notably the bowl was shorter and it had
more of a "squat" shape to it if that makes any sense. The one you
have looks great to me, much more balanced as the squat bowl on the
one I saw made the pipe look "clunky" because the bowl didn't reach
high enough out of the claws. Having the taller bowl (I wonder if it
is wider in diameter, too) in relationship to the upturned claws just
seems "right" and carries the concept of the talons holding the bowl
better. The one I saw had the origiinal stem on it, which sported the
early round button with a hole, as opposed to a slit. Does yours? How
does it smoke? Thanks for posting the pics, great pipe!

Thanks, Randy. I think it looks pretty cool too. It hasn't been shipped yet, so I do not know the button detail or smoking qualities, but I will definitely post after the first smoke! I don't usually go for pipes like this, but I was talking with a friend about this very style of pipe from KBB, and low and behold it shows up on the Bay just a few days later. Go figure!!
