How does the group feel about the true comparability of the two? I
would be delighted to find a few 100G tins of the old Edgeworth if
someone were inclined to off-load them at a price less than my
eye-teeth!

I'm no expert, but I find them quite similar. If you like Edgeworth
Sliced, I believe you will like the new Wessex Burley Slices. I might
like the Wessex a tad better, but I'm not sure I could tell the
difference in a blind taste test. I only have 2 tins of Edgeworth
Sliced left, so I want to hang on to those for obvious reasons, but
good luck finding some.

I haven't been able to get any Edgeworth at all. Did they discontinue it?

Edgeworth Slices was discontinued a little while ago, yes. Only the
ready rubbed version is still available, but from what I've heard
around these parts, it isn't nearly as good. Wessex Burley Slices was
released as a replacement.

I actually preferred Edgeworth Ready Rubbed over Sliced because I felt
that more of the burley taste came through. I bought a tin of Wessex
because I had read it was similar to Edgeworth Sliced. Similar - yes;
the same - no. Frankly I found Wessex to be a little too mellow,
bordering on bland.

I hadn't smoked a great deal of Edgeworth before it disappeared but when
I tried Wessex I couldn't tell the difference.

Joe,
I was lucky enough to purchase two 2 oz. tins of Bohemian Scandal before
the accident. One I smoked and the other I cellared. I have one tin of
Edgeworth Sliced and some in a mason jar that I sample every now and then,
although it is down to the last two or three bowls. Things like that just
happen. Something you enjoy today may not be available tomorrow.

Hi F. Austin,

I have tried Edgeworth ready rubbed, and I like it, but I have recently
smoked a few bowls of Russ Ouelette's Burley and it's much better. I
don't know about Wessex's.

Brief history lesson: From 1903, Larus Bros of Richmond VA made a
number of high quality burley-based products. The best sellers were
Edgeworth Readyrubbed and the Sliced, which continued through the early
1970s.. It was the same ingredients, same formula, just different
forms. The Sliced was discontinued in the mid 1970s, but the RRd
continued in relatively same form. About 1980, the Sliced was
reintroduced but not by Larus. Apparently, the formula and the
marketing rights were sold to a European concern. Of that pedigree, I
am unfamiliar. The Sliced went through a number of different hands
before it was recently discontinued. The Sliced in its contemporary
form was lighter and sweeter than the original form, more Euro taste.
IMHO, Wessex is a good approximation of what was the Euro product,
though neither to my liking because of their lightness.

The Readyrubbed is another story. Larus Bros sold out in the mid-late
1980s, after discontinuing a number of their better products including
Union Jack, Jack O'Diamonds and Q-Boid. The Readyrubbed, VIP, Blend
Eleven, and Executive Mix all ended up in the Lane catalogue. The
Readyrubbed, with which I am most familiar and fondest, has
unfortunately suffered the cruelest fate of all, being relegated to the
same basic leaf and cut as Lane's SWR, and neither are what they were.

SO, please don't equate the RRd with the Sliced, or try to equate
either with their original form, because they are not their original
form, and haven't been since the late 1960s. And, sadly, don't judge
the current RRd product and the less acceptable leaf with even the
product of the late 1980s.

I really don't know the ES, but I just finished my first and only tin
of Wessex BS. I tried it to compare it to MacBaren's Navy Flake.
Frankly, I wouldn't put it in the same ball park as the Navy Flake. Am
I comparing apples and oranges?

Part of the problem with the BS, I think, was the over-hyped mentions
of it here on ASP. Maybe my expectations were too high. BTW, I did let
it age for six months. YMMV.

There are no US sellers, but Orlick is now making Edgeworth Slices in
100g tins which can be purchased here http://www.danishpipeshop.com/.
I found the price with shipping to be cost prohibitve unless you were
going to order in large quantities...which I was not willing to do just
to give it a try.
