I have 3 Viprati pipes. Two 1Q models and a "Special" and they are among the
top 10 of my collection. All are beautifully made and great smokers.

Be nice to those you meet on the way up
for you will surely pass them on the way down.

Bob,
I own 15, with representatives in every grade except the new VIP series. I
even have one of the 3Q's that haven't been made since the early 80's.
They all smoke very well and exhibit imaginitive design. Airhole alignment
is almost always excellent, and everyone of mine easily passes the pipe
cleaner test. They have given me a lot of pleasure and I enjoy them a
lot. That said, because of numerous price increases, the way they have
handled their ongoing business enterprises, and their poor communication
and sporadic updating of the website, I doubt that I will purchase any
more. Their business practices just left a bad taste in my mouth and, of
course, your mileage may vary. You know what they say about opinions and
a**holes...

Bob,
I have 13 of them in grades sandblast through 5Q. I have a page on my
personal website devoted to them if you want to read a little more about
the ones I've bought. I find that these pipes absolutely love virginias,
especially the darker varieties. The best values are usually found in the
2 & 4Q series, with a few gems in 1Q quality. Anything 5Q and above is
a work of art...usually large. If you have any specific questions, feel
free to email.

Bob,
I own a few of them from 1Q through 5Q. Mine are great smokers. Most pass the
pipe cleaner test and the air hole hits the bottom of the bowl in most of mine.
The only pipes that I have that I like better are a couple or three Tinskys.
They can be a lot of bang for the buck.
If you want a beautiful example of one of the high grades, check out the
opening page at www.pipes.org Halbert bought that one and it sure is a
beauty.
Speaking of Halbert. Has any one talked to him or heard from him lately. This
place just isn't the same without him.
Happy smokin',

Congrats to you, 13 is a big number :-)
I have 6 of them and feel very comfortable with mine. I must second that
they love Virginias. I smoke two of mine only with Virginias and the
rest with Virginia Perique or some Aromatics (Eurotean Aromatics not the
sticky ones). Mine are in the 1Q - Fiammata and if you look close enough
you find perfect pipes even in the 1Q range. On my homepage i show them
all and a few of his masterpices of the last year. Have a look if you
want (http://www.sbox.tu-graz.ac.at/home/t/tine99/pipes).
I cannot tell you much about the mail order thing or how they do
business on the net. I have a pipe shop near my place where they sell
Vip's :-) I just ordered once and wast treated in a good way.
I even have been to his workshop in Italy and talked to Luigi at a pipe
show in Austria too. He is a nice and modest guy and likes to work when
money is little but seems to enjoy live when money is big :-) Don't
forget he is Italian and loves his lazybone as much as his workingone.
IMO he does great work on the pipes and knows how to select the Briar
like no other that i know. He is more an artist than a salesman and time
will come when he meet's a guy who helps him with the business stuff.
A longer time ago a lot of posts in ASP lalked about very satisfied
costumers with no problems at all. So i think it depends on the time
when you chatch him. Artists ?????
The other thing is the Homepage. I regret his Internet work. The page
itself is nice put there is nearly no update since Aug. last year.
That's realy baaaaad. No excuse. Even my privat pipepage was updated
more often :-)
BTW he is my favourite pipemaker so this is perhabs not realy objective
:-)
Ciao Martin !

Hello Bob,
You have received many replys and I can add only my 2 cents worth of
information.
I have only two Vipratis puchased before the the invasion from America
after which the prices arose considerably and perhaps also the service
somewhat deteriorated.
My Vipratis are a sb. Rhodesian, which I was very near to burn through
because of the flashy design:
<http://www.uta.fi/~hoanka/eviprati.htm>
It is a good puffer now that I have managed to cake the bottom of
tobacco chamber thus preventing the burn-through.
My other Viprati is an extremely well made, beautiful calabash shaped
briar, which is absolutely marvellous although it is only "2Q". A
great puffer despite the sad fact it is impossible to get the cleaner
down to the bowl. This is not a big setback as it hardly ever qurgles.
I find it extremely hard to decide should I recommed the Vipratis. If
you aske me, perhaps a better choice is a "Don Carlos" pipe from Bruto
Sordini. They are great pipes, the best value for your bucks you can
think about today!
Mellow puffs and dry ashes!
