Pardon my ignorance. I recently aquired a Aldo Velani pipe for Christmas
(after returns and all.) it's one of the Ultima line. I'm having a time
trying to find some info on the quality, etc on the pipe. Any light to
be shed on the subject as well as general consensus on Aldo Velani pieps
would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance to those who reply.

Velani has gotten a pretty bad rap around here. I have 5 Ultimas, and
although they are not my best smokers, they are decent pipes. The varnish
they use looks good, but does make the pipe smoke hotter. Takes awhile to
break in. Longer than most, in my experience. Once broke in, however, none
of them were bad smokers, and a couple were quite good in light of their
price.

True. I think a lot of people are expecting a "champagne" pipe at a "beer"
price.

I've got a "trio" for which I paid $14.95 from Iwan Ries. It's a nice little
pipe, and smokes well. Sure, it's not a Dunhill, but it didn't cost a Dunhill
price. One thing's for sure - my Velani outsmokes any Grabow I've ever had for
the same price or somewhat higher.

I second this. I bought a Velani Ambrosia a couple of months ago. For the
first six weeks or so, it smoked, okay, but not great. Apparently, it just
had a long break-in period, because it's smoking quite well now.

While it's no secret that I don't have the highest opinion of Aldo Velani pipes
(I won't go there now) there is a decent looking one just listed at eBay
(#55078942, an Ultima) for those who may be interested.

I had an AV that was smoking hot until I took a scarifier to it and removed the
varnish ......uh, actually maybe I should have used sandpaper. The scarifier
took some wood off as well and now it smokes much cooler but has a
"fuzzy-rusticated look". You never know.....might be the coming fashion in
cheap pipes.

I have a Velani Calabash... it's the best smoking Velani I've ever seen...
probably because of the huge chamber under the bowl... the bowl is
removable, but is not a large as the bowl on many Velani's... I'd say
something between a small and medium bowl... smokes very slowly however.
Hard to keep lit when first breaking in... but afterwards you can sit it
down for several minutes and it will still be lit.

It is nice to read positive comments about AV pipes. I have become
somewhat of an VA collector. :) All of my Velanis smoke pretty good. I
especially am fond of the Ultima Dark Carved models.

I bought an Aldo Velani "ULTIMA LIGHT" (Oom Paul) on eBay for $39.00. I did
not like the varnish so I sent it to Jim Benjamin who removed it and gave it
a nice waxing. It was a dark, rich reddish color. Now it is a honey color.
It has a very large bowl with only a couple of noticeable fills. After the
removal of the varnish, it now smokes as good as my best pipes.

I have 7 Velanis. Shape #55 is the bet smoking pipe I own. Go figure.

I have a dozen or so, and have given away 4 or 5 for gifts. I think they are a
good pipe for the money; my best smoker was an "Octogon" which unfortunately I
lost in Cost Rica recently. However, I still have several others that I am in
varying degrees of breaking in, and several unsmoked. Only one did not smoke
well...the others vary a bit, but all are acceptable. I got most of mine from
RC Hamlin's AV closeout on the net. I highly advise you check out his
collection before they are alll gone.
