Does anyone know what was the ultimate fate of Decatur Industries? I'm
glad that I found a nice walnut-based ashtray with pipe rest on Ebay,
but I was wondering why I can't find Decatur stuff new.

I could be mistaken, but I believe they've gone out of business or at
least don't make pipe and tobacco accessories anymore.

I Googled a bit. Found three "Decatur Industries Inc." involved
in woodworking or mill work. No mention specifically of pipe
furniture in anything I read.

Barre, Indiana: Factory equipment was either sold off or about
to be sold off at end of April (year-date not stated). Building
(former Decatur Industries) vacant and available for industrial
use. Lender for this company located in Eau Claire, WI, so
perhaps related to or part of the following.

Eau Claire, Wisconsin: Possibly 75 employees, estimated sales $9
million a year. Office furniture, of reconstituted wood.

Taiwan: Company funded 1985. Agressive advertising for a variety
of woodworking and mill products. Seems to be a
subcontractor/supplier rather than a brand-name retail goods company.

A fourth company of that name in Fort Lauderdale, Florida is a
contractor for drywall and insulation.

Cheers!

I'm sure that's the one. The eighth hit using "Decatur Industries Inc."
is a PDF advertising a liquidation auction. It mentions pipe furniture
in a list of finished goods. Judging from the fact the auction was a
Wednesday April 29 and looking at equipment model years, it must have
been in 2009.

Bingo. The only Wednesday April 29 in the last decade is 2009.

I looked at a Dun & Bradstreet page, that I had skipped because I
knew D&B wants money and I did not intend to provide any, and
found the Barre Indiana Decatur Industries identified as a branch
of the Eau Claire Decatur Industries, which apparently still
exists. Whether the pipe furniture business was transferred or
closed out totally is beyond my ken.

The pipe racks I see offered new seem very close to what Decatur
offered. I haven't seen anything close to the ashtrays, which I find
very beautiful and functional.

I have a question that I have been trying to find an answer to. I just purchased a Decatur Industries wooden pipe stand with humidor box. Can I put the pipe tobacco straight into the box? Is there any prep needed? Should I put the tobacco into a ziplock and then into the box. It does have the stone screwed into the bottom of the lid. Is there anything that I need to add to the box, (humidifier packet, water, etc.)? Thanks for any input.

I don't know anything about that specific box but in general wood will
lose moisture pretty fast. A cigar humidor is a good example. Even
though they are intended for storing cigars for a long time you still
have to keep an eye on them and make sure the humidity is maintained.

I have a pipe stand with a glass jar with a loose fitting wood lid that
I do use for storing pipe tobacco. But I tend to like my tobacco dry
(very dry is how most smokers would describe it). I'd suggest trying
the box with a few days worth of tobacco to see if you like using it and
if it loses moisture fast slow enough for your tastes.
