I ask a simple, serious question, and just look at the response I get.

Thanks a lot. On my own, I found out what he really smoked. He smoked a
mixture of Prince Albert and U238. Now, what kind of pipe did he smoke? No
jokes, please, I really want to know.

Lets see if we can puzzle it out from the tobacco choice. Hmmmmm,
Prince Albert is a very highly "treated" element, and U238 is a
verrrry heavy element. Therefore the pipe would have to be strong,
and able to withstand the high temperatures produced by burning such a
mixture. Hello, I've got it!!!

I was thinking along the same lines, but don't know if pyrolytic graphite is
a suitable radiation barrier. Perhaps lead and concrete could be employed.
Instead of borrowing technology from the space industry, the boat building
business could be employed. The same techniques used to make concrete boats
could be used to make pipes. Gives new meaning to "from stem to stern."

And he thought he'd get a serious answer...

Happy New Year,
Gregory

A radiation barrier it would not be, but the stuff should make an
excellent moderator!

But, this is an unmoderated news group! Perhaps that's why I never smoke my

Have no fear. It merely moderates the speed of the neutrons. Well, it
_does_ capture a few, but not many. <grin>

You actually thought you'd get a serious answer here? Silly you......

Robert Oppenheimer smoked mostly cigarettes, but when he did smoke a pipe, it was a straight billiard. One of my college Physics professors was a student of Opie's and worked on the Manhattan Project with him. He told me that Opies favorite pipe tobacco was Middletons Walnut, and he smoked the same. Strangely, I tried some and commented to him that it didn't have any walnut flavor. He said that the blend is actually a copy of a famous 19th century blend named after one of the most famous streets in Philadelphia...Walnut St, where the tobacco store that originally blended it was.

Hope this helps.

Well I'm sure it does help, matter of fact I'm sure it helped him answer his 16+ year old question.

Well, it is sort of like the scientific methodology. Eventually someone
will get it right, or come up with something closer in some way to being
right. Usually after it no longer makes any difference.

And this one only took half a generation, not even two decades. Consider
a matter of greater importance to mankind, such as how long vegetable
fats have been in vogue... (Crisco since the late 19th Century or early
20th Century).

Cheers!
