Got up early to head out and drown some worms before our weather gets poopy. Got to my favorite little lake and had it all to myself. It was too windy to really be pleasent...prolly 20 mph wind from the south...got my stuff set up...got a line in the water and after a struggle got my pipe lit. Fish weren't biting but a beautiful morning none the less. As to be expected after a couple of hours..cars started showing up..most of the folks went to the far side which was fine... finally a couple of 30 some things with a pair of little dogs decided to settle 30 ft from me 'upwind'. (now my pipe was out cold, the wind made it too hard to light, was just clenching a cold pipe)

The couple hadn't been there 10 minutes when the female half started coughing and waving her hand....recognizing the signs,, I ignored it. After about 5 min of pointed respirtory distress.. the man in the couple walks over to me and says " You can ruin your health but not ours... put out that stinky pipe..its bothering my wife."

I politely pointed out they were upwind in 20 mph gale and that it was physically impossible to smell my pipe, secondly it wasn't even lit, and finally I was there first.

He walks back..talks to her... she comes stomping over to me and says "Put out that f**cking stinky gross pipe, or I'm calling the cops!!" I looked at her, pulled out my lighter... and calmly managed after a struggle to get one good draw...and blew it towards her.

She went back, after calling me several choice names, they gathered up there stuff and moved up the shore. I watched them resettle, and she pulled out her phone and started dialing. I had already decided to quit for the day, so I packed up my gear...and left!

How was your morning?

P.S. I am usually out in the middle of the Chesapeake Bay when fishing so thankfully I don't run into anybody with a thumb up his/her keister that often!

Its the first time I've been accosted in Iowa....when I lived in Illinoise it was a regular occurance. When I lived in Detroit it was the best...anybody who bitched about smokers was endangering their own welfare!

Geez, Max. What a nasty intrusion to your day. I'm surprised, even
though I've seen plenty of over-the-top, flabbergasting, moronic,
ignorant, uncivilized reactions to an unsmoked pipe. I get them when I
venture out with a pipe in my mouth with NO tobacco in it at all, just
an empty pipe, and it always floors me, even though I know it's
coming. I started doing this when I read of another who routinely does
the same thing, and I wanted to see just how it works out. I always
use a pipe that has never been smoked (a cob I keep with me for this
endeavor). The reason for me using one that has not been smoked is
because should a policeman actually "investigate" me and my pipe they
can easily see that it has NEVER been lit, and thus their ire becomes
directed at the ones who have bothered them with this horsepucky. Yes,
it's happened more than once.
I'm sorry that the current growing condemnation of anything
"tobacco" has resulted in such a senseless and childish interruption
to your day, Max. When I do it I'm well aware that I'm going to
garner someones attention. Under the conditions that you were in, the
last thing that I would be expecting is for someone upwind, with my
pipe not lit, would be making such a fuss. The fact that the husband
came over and you showed him it was not lit should have been the end
of it, yet the wife (God help this fella) would not even face the
facts and had to vomit her vile damnation of you and your pipe all
over the shore. Very nice. Her choice of position, language, and
refusal to aknowledge the truth of the situation, along with her lack
of general civility is becoming more common than I would have ever
dreamed, and I'm sure that at the next meeting of the Universal
Enforcers of Enlightenment and Peace her horrible experience as she
stood steadfast while facing the Demons of Hell will garner her a
pantload of both sympathy and admiration and will further solidify the
need to crucify those who don't embrace the New Order....
Really sorry Max. Thanks for trying to play nice, though it was
unappreciated.

After nearly 30 years in mental health, I can only say that the behavior you were forced to
deal with is diagnostic of a severe, and likely unchangeable, personality disorder. Kudos to
you for behaving like a gentleman and my sympathies to that husband. Hope he has a good
attorney; he's gonna need one.

I don't understand ... why didn't you just volunteer to call the
police for her and have them come out and deal with the situation
along with having a embarrassment complaint filed against her along
with, I'm sure there is a leash law even where you were at so just in
case her vermin rat dogs were not leashed she could get nailed for
that as well and while your at it walk right up to the man and tell
him if he had any balls he would have his bitchity haggity skank of a
wife used to the pipe if ya knows what I mean.

Now for the important stuff ... what did she look like? Big mammy
gammys or little lumpy bumps? Nice legs or did she have cankles all
the way to her muffin top? Could she use a box of steel wool every
morning to cleanse her face? Was she a bagger or eye poker type of
hag? Come on ... we need the important details of it all along with do
you think the dogs would have been better slowing roasted on a spit
over a fire or not really even good enough to feed to the hogs?

Hey Max...I got one for ya....back in my Bach days I used to hang out in
a little seedy beach bar....one day...it was after midnight....I was in
the back of the bar shooting pool...the front was filled with 25 or so
people most smoking cigs....a very pregnant woman came over from the
front cocktail in hand demanding that I put out my cigar as it was
killing her unborn baby......I won't bore you with what happened next
but I closed the place....:)

Gee Max, sorry you had to run into a couple of assholes. Look at the
bright side, that guy has to live with that obnoxious bitch.

Just maybe he is the reason she is an obnoxious bitch ... just a
thought.

I'm fortunate to be a big guy who always looks grouchy so rarely do I ever
get confronted on things like that. I'm as violent as Captain Kangaroo so
that works well for me. I think in that situation I would have started
videoing her with my phone so that I could use it as evidence if it came
down to a legal case. That situation sucks, and so do those people.
