I just bought another clay pipe from a local tobacconist. I liked this one
especially because it had a big bowl. I really enjoy clay pipes I love smoking
Gawith ropes in them. My only problem is this the tip is not waxed. What can
I do to stop my lips from sticking to this thing? I was thinking about using
clear nail polish, any suggestions?

Hi,

I just run some water on the tip of a clay pipe. Due to
the porosity of the material it's soaking the water and
I have no problems with sticking.

All my pipes have sealing wax tips. This is the wax used on envelopes
and then a stamp is used to make and impression and seal the envelop.

This is also what Steve Bray in Nova Scotia uses on his pipes. Works
great and adds some color to the pipe itself.

You could probably buy some wax from a sewing supply store. Heat the wax up a
bit and dip the tip in it. It will also come in handy if you have a briar with
a loose stem.

I smoke clay pipes regularly in pursuit of my living history hobby
(american fur trade era, 1750 to 1840). When I need to coat the tip of
one which has been worn clean, I plug the hole and wipe the last 1 to 1
and 1/2 inches with melted red sealing wax. As you may have guessed,
though, sealing wax is not uncommon among the group I hang out with.
It can be found at most stationery stores or those stores specializing
in high grade pens and such. Since we actually hand write messages
with paper and quill, we keep a supply of wax to seal them. You can
also use parrafin, sold wherever canning supplies are available.
Simply melt it in a can and dip the pipe stem in. Works well, but is
not as colorful as sealing wax. By the way, a wax coating was quite
common on clay pipe stems during the colonial period for exactly the
reason you mentioned. Good luck.

I have a clay that has glaze on the last inch of stem that I have used
for years as a tobacco sample "test bed". I recently slipped a section
of clear plastic tubing over the end so that I can grip it with my teeth
without discomfort. The walls of the tubing are about 3/32" thick, so
I'm going to shave down the top and bottom to create a lip or button
like a conventional bit. I guess I got the idea from the rubber things
designed to slip over regular bits. Of course, YMMV.
Hope this Helps,
Bob

Good call, Bill - I'd rather have chapstick on my lips than clear nail
polish! That'd be too much like permanent lip gloss...Oh, my word -
I just flashed back to 1977 and it WASN'T pretty!

Yeah, but were you?

(Flashing back to a brief period as a guitar slinger in a glam rock band in
the early 80's. Makeup, big hair, leather pants. It's pretty hysterical now,
but we sure were serious about it then!)

Along the same line, I wonder if that plastic shrink tubing used in
electronics might work if you could find some that is large enough. It us
usually used to seal up connections so you dont have any exposed
connections. You can just put it on the tip and heat it up with the heat
from a lighter and it should shrink right into place.
