I have seen mention of these tobaccos a couple of times, especially in
reference to their nicotine content, and was wondering if anyone could
provide more information about them, maybe even a list of which blends are
considered to be from the Lakeland District.
Many thanks.

I'm not an authority here, but as I understand it when people talk about
Lakeland tobacco, they're most talking about Samuel Gawith and Gawith,
Hogarth & Co....blenders from Cumbria, the lake district of Scotland. So
stuff like 1792, Grousemoor, Skiff, anything with 'Kendal' in the name
(Kendal Brown, Kendal Plug, etc.), plugs and twists, best brown, etc.

hope this helps,

Seems that Lakeland description follows the Sam Gawith and Gawith &
Hoggarth tobaccos. I prefer the Sam Gawith blends, but there are other
here who swear by the G&H blends. Either one makes exceptional natural
flake tobaccos, many of which will knock you on your ashtray.

Hi Jon,

here's quite a thorough list and evaluations on most Lakeland
(Gawith&Hoggarth and S.Gawith) tobaccos on Synjeco website in
Switzerland (and you can order sample packs to your hearts content,
which I recommend):

Hi John. These are tobaccos made in the Lake District of England by
Samual Gawith Ltd and Gawith Hogarth & Co. They are excellent produducts
produced in a very traditional manner, some blends going back 200 years.

Check out ....
http://www.ghtt.freeserve.co.uk/
http://www.samuelgawith.co.uk/

and Tareks excellent reviews at
http://www.theitalianpipe.com/tobreview/tobrev.htm

In the States it is possible to get sampler packs, and John and Sheila Davies
(http://www.sigmundsfinecigars.com/) are the importers of the Gawith Hogarth
range (and nice people!).

Smoke in Peace,
Paul.

Jon, even if it is true that there are some quite strong tobaccos coming
from Englands Lake District, there are among them many very enjoyable,
satisfying but not overwhelming tobacs. You will surely enjoy those SG and
GH tobaccos most if you have learned to appreciate well-done Virginia
blends. I am fairly new to pipesmoking and did the shift away from
'drugstore-blends' (only pipe tobacco available here in Colombia) to Lake
District Virginias, and it was truly a revelation for me! At that point in
time, I didn't like Latakia at all, and happily began to explore the
richness and the subtleties of those great English Virginias. Sure, I burnt
my tongue more often than not, but still there was big flavour to be
enjoyed, compared to my previous tobacco diet. Nowadays, I have learned to
enjoy Latakia mixtures, but still smoke pressed Virginias most of the time.
If you are serious about trying out those Lakeland tobacs, these are my
recommendations of those not to be missed:

From Samuel Gawith:
* Full Virginia Flake; ask Jeff Schwartz about that one
* Best Brown Flake
* Medium Virginia Flake; I love it!
* Curly Cut; vanilla-topped

From Gawith+Hoggarth:
* Glengarry Flake, lightly-topped
* Broken Flake No. 7, topping a bit more pronounced, but delicious smoke
* Curly Cut / Curly Cut Deluxe
* Dark Bird's Eye; this one is the stongest in this round-up, but I don't
find it overwhelming at all. I like it very much as a naturally sweet,
tobacco-tasty and relaxing evening-smoke, as others love their after-dinner
cigar.

Well, these are those I enjoy most, others certainly will have their own
preferences, and, of course, YMMV. I wish you pleasure on your exploration
into Englands Lake District!

Best regards from Bogotá,

Andreas

I think you were asking, essentially, if there are any OTHER tobacco
manufacturers from Lakeland District? Not that I know of.

I´m no smartass, but: the Gawith tobaccos are produced in
Kendal,Cumbria, England, the region is called Lake District (
Wordsworth, Beatrice Potter). No scots involved. The term Lakelands is
associated with the central part of Ireland ( Counties Longford, Cavan,
Westmeath, Offaly, Laois )
No harm meant,

Cheers,

Michael

Well, as long as we are going to be nit-picky about it, Gawith,
Hoggarth & Co. does produce Lakeland Dark and I think Lakeland Light
as well. Maybe some others. The former strikes me as an excellent
RYO tobacco.

It may be that the Lakeland label came from an Irish tobacco
manufacturer GH&C bought up years and years ago. Adams, I think
someone once said it was.

Just contributing to the ocnfusion!

Actually, I think that's Samuel Gawith that produces Lakeland Dark and Light.
GH make something that, to my mind are similar, called Kendal Dark and Light.
I've smoked the Lakeland Dark as RYO and it's not bad but, as I recall, even
for me, it was a bit rough on the lungs. I think it's excellent pipe tobacco
though.
