If a web site exists, there most likely will be a link to it in the
commercial section at http://www.pipes.org

But given the unlikeliness of there being many persons named Hayim
Pinhas, I would suggest going to http://www.altavista.com and
searching for "Hayim Pinhas" and see what pops up. If nothing, he
is not on the Web. If too many hits, add +Istanbul or maybe
+meerschaum along with changing the original term to +"Hayim Pinhas"
complete with quotation marks to ensure the search engine will look
for exactly these two words in exactly this order.

Cheers!

About thirty years ago, I ordered and received
several meerschaum pipes from Hayim Pinhas in Istabul.
Does anybody know if this mail order operation is still
in business, and if so what the current address (or
web site) is? Thanks.

Dear Jim:

Bizarre coincidence! Today I actually threw away several old cardboard boxes
from Hayim Pinhas meerschaums ...but I did keep the papers from the company,
thinking I might like to contact them at some point.

The address I have is:

HAYIM PINHAS
P.O. Box 500
Istanbul, Turkey

I have no idea how current this address is. Good luck! Let me know if you
reach the redoubtable Mr. Pinhas.

This firm must predate my pipe smoking days by 20 years, but the only
suggestion I have is that you should contact the Jewish Community of
Istanbul, as this is clearly a Hebraic name. As it is a very close-knit
community, it should not be hard to track down Hayim Pinhas or his
family if he is deceased. Be aware that Pinhas is usually a first name
(Ataturk made Jews adopt Turkish family names, so that Pinhas is not a
typical Turkish Jewish surname - it does exist as a surname in other
communities, though), so that the principal of the firm could also be
known by his actual family name, with Pinhas being a middle name.
However, I am sure that you will get a response to any message looking
for a pipemaker/exporter named Hayim Pinhas. Just do a web search for
Jewish Community Istanbul; send an E-mail to the webmaster of web pages
that may look like they are official or semi-official. The Turkish
Jews, like all Turks, are very warm and will be only too happy to help
you especially as even non-pipe smokers take pride in the national
craft of meerschaum pipemaking. Who knows - you may even get a response
from a fellow meerschaum smoker.

Friends:

Interestingly enough, I have learned recently that most of the meerschaum pipe
marketers in Turkey are members of the Jewish community there. Apparently, it
is a traditionally "Jewish" occupation to sell meerschaum pipes. Any pipe
merchants in Turkey will either know Hayim Pinhas or be his "mishpocha."

Interesting - what kind of job is that for a nice Jewish boy? :)

Well, it's been 31 years since i last bought a pipe from them and the P.O. Box is the same as I had back then. I did send out a letter requesting a new catalog if there had one but never heard from them. Their prices back then were like crazy ! $20 got you a pipe in a hard, fitted case. I have a 3 pipe set which , unfortunately, I cracked the best of the three right in half. I am still sick about it. Great craftmanship too ! I still have a price list from the last time i purchased a pipe from them plus their catalog from 1983. Hope someone finds out if they are in business still.

Greetings,
Ah, A blast-from-the-past.
I bought two meers from Pinhas while stationed in Iceland via the
naval base exchange. Still smoke 'em a couple of times a week. As you
said, they are servicable meers at a very attractive price.
Sadly, this doesn't answer your question, but t'was a nice reminder
for me.
Happy smokes, Travis

What a timely resurrection here. There's a lot of talk going on over at PSF about Pinhas right now. At least I have something to tell them now, with proper attribution to ASP of course.

Wow! Going through junk that has accumulated in my dresser and came upon my Hayim Pinhas catalog and several of my meerschaum pipes from back in the 70's.
