I just talked to "Cup-O-Joes" in NY and "Payless Pipes" in New Orleans
and they both said that Dunhill was still making their own tobaccos.
What has happened is that the old importer has dropped the line and
that a new importer into the USA is yet to be named. We have jumped
to the conclusion that Dunhill was no longer making these tobaccos but
it is just not true. The out of stock situation on Penzance is simply
because of the rush to beat the April 1 deadline caused by S-CHIP.
Sincerely
John in the Indian Nations

John--I got same info from friends at Iwan Ries, Chicago this week.
Confirmed again what they had said couple months ago. I miss some
those Dunnies and hope they can get it settled for a US distributor.
Amazing that. If you had a market and customer base, anywhere in this
day and age, haggling over a distributor [and there ARE those here who
who would take it, and do it proud] you would think the company and
family there who are in dispute over it, would get cranking on it. In
meantime, folks have moved to other brands...what a loss in revenue. A
company is in business for two reasons: to get AND maintain customers.
Get at it Dunhill...anything worth doing, is worth doing poorly to
get started...but for goodness sake, get started. Bests all..

ol' ML.

I recently talked to someone very much in the know when it comes to
Dunhill products. His thoughts were that there's a 50-50 chance that
they just won't be importing tobacco into the U.S. ever again. If
folks want them they'll have to be ordered through European shops now.
I tend to believe this person. If it was a hugely profitable
enterprise they would have picked up a new distributor immediately!

Course it's just my .2 cents but I think it's over...

This summer, you will see the re-introduction of Dunhill tobaccos,
possibly including some previously discontinued blends. I am not at
liberty to comment beyond that at this time. Just relax and sit
tight.

Well - maybe.

I think many of the "traditional" European manufacturers are concerned
about legal liability. Its a lot easier to get sued in the US, and
lose a major case - think about the cigarette manufacturers.

I have heard about some companies where tobacco products were only a
part of their US product line, and the potential problems with legal
issues made it just not worth it, even with a profitable product.

That's why Amphora is no longer availble, for one.

Yeah, but Dunhill, BAT and Orlik are still on the hook as they still
sell cigarettes and cigars. I've been very confused about this.

This is my understanding of what has happened with Dunhill tobaccos.
Firstly, Alfred Dunhill of London no longer holds the trademark rights
for the Dunhill tobacco products- they are owned by BAT (British
American Tobacco). The importer was Lane Limited (a division of BAT).
When BAT moved Lane to another division, Conwood, the decision to move
away from pipe tobaccos was made. Thus the reason for the Dunhill
disappearance, and the elimination of many of Lane's bulk blends,
The rumors have it that the Dunhill blends may reappear at some point,
possibly under another name, but at this time I don't have anything
concrete.
