Bjarne- Can be had for under 40 bucks as an estate if you keep your
eyes open. I got two new ones for 35 at one point on ebay (and not the
viking classics either) They are generally attractive and good smokers.
The drilling tends to be off in the bents, but with some gymnastics,
most will pass a cleaner.
Savinelli- similar pricing to bjarne on the estate market. I don't
think they smoke quite as well, but they tend to be pretty good. Be
sure they include the filterless adapter, although I would imagine you
could get a replacement.
Larsen- The machine made ones are nothing fancy to look at, but good
smokers, and the two I have don't seem to have any fills. Around 40
bucks, sometimes less.
S&R- wildly undervalued, but excellent smokers. You don't see many used
ones, but when you do, people seem to not know what they are. Both of
mine were under 25 bucks on ebay, and smoke well. Their yard pipes are
a steal new.
Armellini- There are higher and lower grades of these. I have three of
the low grades. Two were 15 dollars. The big one was 35. One of them
had a pretty cheesy stem originally, but I got it replaced, and it is
nice now. I haven't seen many lately, but keep your eyes open.
Bertram- I don't know much, but people seem to swear by them. I just
ebayed one for 24 bucks shipped. Will report back, but sounds like they
are steals.
Help a newbie out, post other suggestions
Scandia or Royal Danish- These are Stanwell seconds which are usually
under $15.00 when found on the estate market. The three that I have are
employed as yard pipes in my rotation and both smoke superbly.
J.M. Boswell-(entry level) Excellent smokers which break in with
complete ease and can be purchased brand new for under $50.00

Grabow Westbrooks are the Zippo of pipes: not elegant, but well made,
satisfying to smoke and nearly indestructible. Though the ones you find
on eBay are often smoked to pieces, they can usually be cleaned up
easily and the quality of the briar is miles above modern Grabows.
Sadly, the word seems to be getting out on these, as I used to grab
them up three for $10, and lately I've seen them selling for $30 and
more. If you don't want to clean one up or gamble on condition, Frenchy
usually has a few at the over $30 range, and it's still a good deal.

I like all your choices. Haven't known about S&Rs;are they usually
listed that way, or is this veteran pipesters shorthand for the brand?

To the list, I would also Tinderbox Napoli. These are supposed to be
armellini seconds. I got one for 5 bucks, and while not my favorite, it
is more than 5 bucks worth of pipe.
THanks for the posts guys, keep em coming
Ed,
Royal Danish and Scandia are true "seconds".
Of course the meaning of second is not clear, but indeed these names
are representatives of lines of Stanwell not as highly graded as the
proper Stanwells. Of course they might smoke just great.

Same of GBD's by the way, if staying under 50 dollars.
If one can invest 50 to 100 the options open up a great deal with
Parkers, Sasienis, Big Bens, and lower end Comoy's are also great
deals and usually smoke great.
