Is it possible to replace stems for Dr. Grabow pipes?

I would really appreciate if anyone here could direct me to a company
that supplies replacement stems. I've looked through posts since June
24... some 18,000, and have found few references to Dr. Grabows. I
realize they are low end, perhaps not worthy of your consiseration. At
the moment they are what I can afford.

Perhaps someone could suggest where I might buy stems and fit them myself
to Grabow pipes.

Lane Limited and Sparta Industires seem to be unreachable, which I find
frustrating and less than customer friendly. A web search produces no way
to contact them. They make more pipes than anyone else in the world but
there are no references to customer service, or even an address to
contact them. Does anyone have comments on that?

By the way, I haven't always smoked Grabow's. At one time I had a
collection of eighteen pipes which had taked me about twelve years to
assemble. All of them rather nice. Alas, I don't have them now. What I do
have is two kids in college.

I would really appreciate any help or suggestions from knowledgable folks
in this group.

Sebastian,

Grabows are definitely worth our attention. Heaven's know most of us
have had one or two. Anyway, yes you can get a stem replaced for one in most
places that does any stem repair. Like Mark Tinsky here on ASP, or I don't
know if Guy from Affordable Pipes does that.
Anyway, the problem is a stem replacement may be more expensive then the
pip-e itself. Try this link though for just a stem you can buy and have
shipped. http://www.pimopipecraft.com/round.html

Sebastian,

You can get one from American Smoking Pipe Company
http://webcatalog.cybersun.com/scripts/webcatalog.dll/Products?AMS~100956278~1~101
but I'm not sure if its worth the trouble for a Dr. Grabows, unless
there's some sentimental reason.

HI Sebastion
The problem with repairing inexpensive pipes is that the repair can
cost as much as a new pipe. A Graybow repiar can even be a little more
expensive than normal as I think they have a metal tenon piece that
needs to be removed from the old stem and put on the new one. So
you re looking at at least $20 to fix when you include shipping .
That moust be close to what a new Graybow would sell for?

Thank you all for your replies. You are all very kind.

I am going to try buying stems from one of the suppliers suggested and
fitting them myself. Humm, I bet that will be fun.

Sincerely,

Sebastian

All is not lost. For a stem replacement, pack it up with a note and
$6 and ship it to:

Sparta Industries
Attn: Dr. Grabow
1731 US HWY 215
Sparta NC 28675

I have two stems replaced (one a few months ago) and their turnaround
is pretty fast (about 2 weeks).

I also have a phone number for them 800-221-4134 which is where I got
these instructions.

Lots pf good advice here. The other tack is to watch ebay, you can
usually get a number of Grabows for low bucks, and eventually build up
an inexpensive collection of stems.

What now saddens me is that I have thrown away so many Grabow and
Medico stems. I will start keeping them from now on to share with the
brothers of the pipe inexpensive.
