I just bought a Ferndown, had to see what all the oil-cured hype was about, the
pipe is a Root 1 star billiard kind of looks like a Bing Crosby pipe. After
the first bowl I am already thinking on buying another Ferndown, it was a
fantastic smoke. I know it has been posted before but how about posting the
Ferndown grading system again. Thanks in advance.

Congratulations on the Ferdown.

Anyone out there know who else oil-cures their briars?

There's Ashton also. In the US, there's Lee Von Erck and Randy Wiley that I
know of. Jim Cook doesn't believe in oil, and uses something different, as
do I. Other than these, I can't think of anyone else... does/did Upshall
oil cure?
Happy smoking,
Trever

I have a Chief stacked Billard, Kriswell or some other Danish brand, which
says Oil Cured on the stem.

I have a contemporary Barling which tastes like it is oil-cured.

I have always woundered about the Edward Pipes, I own two of them (Tabert,
I think) and that is supposed to have maximum curing. They do smoke well
and are fairly inexpensive, light, nice wood, nice shapes. Not a Dunhill but
for he price a good pipe.

Well, it would stand to reason that some of the second lines from these
factories would also be oil cured, that is if they were actual seconds. That
would open up Parker, Hardcastle, Taylor Mades, Becker & Musico and tens of
others...

i have a couple of Upshall's that i would swear are oil cured..

Where are the Barling experts?

Unfortunately the Parker and Hardcastles that were Dunhill seconds were
not oil-cured. Taylor-Mades were produced before Ashton began oil-curing
their pipes and Upshalls were an attempt to return to the glory days of
Charatan, hence no oil-curing. Don't know about the others.
One brand not yet mentioned was Jarl, who produced a line of oil-treated
pipes.

Would be nice to have an LJS grading system posted again! Check out the
James Barber alternative to the Ferndown $$

Thank you. The Jarl Chieftain is oil cured, and is so engraved on the shank.

Ferndown, by Les Wood, is made in the following grades, in order of
escalating "quality":

Bark (in black and "Antique" (tan))
Reo (similar to Dunhill Bruyere, only darker and more purple)
Root (natural)
SG (straightgrain)

These pipes will also have zero to 3 stars that are *supposed* to
designate size, with three stars representing the largest bowl size.
There are, of course, smooth/bark combinations. YMMV...

I'm certainly no expert on Barling, but according to Tad Gage,
Barlings were air cured.
