Meerschaum suggestions?

Having not smoked meerschaums in 10 years or so and having sold off
the ones I did have for their connection to an individual who is no
longer a fond memory, I've been looking at meers and thought I'd ask
those on the forum for their input. After all, we could use another
post or two, right?
So here's the criteria: Block meerschaum as opposed to pressed, GOOD
DRAW, more standard shapes like billiard, bent billiard, rhodesian,
etc, not Sheik, Mozart, Theodore Cleaver, or Marilyn Manson, and as in
expensively as possible while meeting the above criteria.
I've seen the Baki's but I don't like the idea of spending 275.00
for a billiard in meerschaum, even if it is a great pipe. I'll
eventually pick one up, but am looking to get a few that fit the above
criteria without spending 300 a pop.

Randy....the last 2 meers I have bought are from Sinan Altinok at
AltinokMeeerschaumPipes.com....I will never buy another meer from anyone
else....awsome quality at reasonable prices...if you buy from his Ready
Pipes list it takes about 2 weeks as they are shipped from Turkey...if
you buy from his catalog and has to have one made your looking a month
or two...still worth the wait I think....nothing like getting one of
those little yellow boxes from Ankara.....:)

I would suggest you need one more criterion: inside diameter and
depth of the tobacco chamber.
Beyond that, beauty and reputation cost money. Most purveyors of
pipes and tobaccos that have a website will have a few
meerschaums available, and you can look at how prices run. You
should not hesitate to e-mail in questions, or make a telephone
call to obtain more information on a pipe before ordering (unless
you just have lots of money and don't care what you get for it).
And if you get a pipe and on inspection it varies greatly from
what you thought it would be (pictures can be deceiving), send it
back. Yeah, it will or should cost you the postage both ways,
but that is better than keeping a pipe not suited to you.

maybe buying one has crossed my mind. Anybody know if meers will crack
if they've been left in the cold (like -5F) and then smoked?

I will second this recommendation! Altinok is my sole source of meers.
Great selection, best quality I've seen and excellent service.

Any real pipe maker working in meerschaum will be obvious as you wander
around the Internet - copies, knockoffs and junk are pretty easy to
detect in looking at their photos.

As a number of others have already said, Mr. Altinok's meers are well
worth the money. Sinan is a long term friend of ASP. From personal,
anecdotal experience, he and his top flight carvers made two custom
designed pipes for my two sons in years past...outstanding work and
wonderful smokes.

much anywhere if it doesn't kill him and his wife is determined to stay
there. The worst it's done to me is a few frostbit toes a little less
than a decade ago, and they're mostly okay nowadays.
We saw -21F winter before last. I used to make pipes in my uninsulated
van when it was 10-15F because I had no choice... no money, no job,
pipes and ASP were my only hope at that time.
I do recall one night a couple years after we moved here, it was -15F
and we were living in a 21' camp trailer, in the middle of the night,
the heater stopped working. The wife held a flashlight outside in the
blizzard (no kidding) while I took the heater out. I carried it over to
the van, got lucky and fixed it, and put it back in.
Times were tougher then, I must've been too. I'm older now and living
large on social security. <g>

The first meer I bought was a Best brand for $15. And I thought I bought it from you on ebay maybe 13 or 14 years ago. Yes? My recall isn't very good these days. anyway, it has turned out to be a good smoking pipe and has colored to a light brown.
That said, the best meer I've got is a large lattice carved Dublin IMP by Altinok. I purchased it at the Columbus Pipe Show in ... 02 or 05. I bought it from Smoker's Haven from Sailorman Jack (that should provide the appropriate date as he worked for Premel for only a short time before his passing).
