I am traveling to Ireland at the end of May. I have never been, and being an
avid pipe smoker, I am extremely interested in finding (as well as visiting) as
many pipe shops/tobacco shops as possible. Any leads would be greatly
appreciated. (I will be traveling from Dublin through the South and over to the
East. I will not be going to Northern Ireland).

The only decent tobacco shops I found were in Dublin (Peterson and Fox, next
to each other opposite of Trinity College) and O'something (probably
O'Connor) in Cork. Don't have the address in Cork but you can look it up in
the yellow pages. The rest was a laugh but I suppose that we're used to very
good tobacco shops in Denmark and others may find those in Ireland pretty
good. The prices sure were great, Petes were app. 20% cheaper than in the UK
in late 1997 and the difference is probably even larger now that the ŁUK is
very strong. BTW, the Fox in Dublin had a fair selection of Wilmer pipes but
apart from that you won't see anything but Petes. That gets boring after a
while IMO...

I agree that there are few pipe shops in Ireland.
You'll get the odd old fashioned mom'n'pop newsagent
store which stocks Peterson's seconds (there's a couple
of these in Dublin and one in Sligo and one in Ennis
which I am definitely aware of).

The other pipe stores I am aware of South o' the border
are:
- Murray's Off-license in the heart of Galway town.
Extensive Peterson's selection.
- A cigar/pipe shop, perhaps "Little Havana" in
Carlow town (again they are a Peterson's stockist
with a glass case full of decent Petes)
- I'd love to know the name of the Cork shop since
I travel there sometimes and never noticed it
- I heard there was one in either Waterford or
Wexford.

In general in Ireland its hard to get anything other
than Pete's pipes or Falcons (UK made). Fox's have
some Parker Hardcastles and some Wilmer Straight grains
(which look lovely and I previously posted a request
to see how fellow pipesters rate them).
Fox also may have their own pipes also made specially
for them. They do a nice range of tobacco,

Squire Mixture (Va/Turkish/hint of vanilla)
bankers mixture (rich latakia + havana leaf!)

From Peterson's the Sherlock Holmes tobac is interesting
as a change of pace (its an orangy tinged Virginia ribbon
cut). Their Old Dublin is a nice mild latakia and their
in-house bulk blend, Deluxe is a very alluring aromatic
which has a cult following (;-)!)

Hope this helps for your trip.

Best regards,

seanchai/ (Ian)

Hi Gus! How I envy u! Ireland is one of the nicest countries I`ve ever been to.
Being a pipe afficionado too, I of course looked for tobaccoshops there.IMO
there are only two shops (sigh) You`ll have to visit: Fox`s and Peterson, both in
Dublin, and quite close together. Peterson is in Grafton Street , Fox`s is just
around the corner. Both are situated close to Bank of Ireland/ Trinity College. You
might also be able to make an appointment to visit The Peterson factory in
Sallynoggins,
just give them a call in advance, and I`m sure they will show You around.Very
friendly people there, really devoted to making pipes. Hope I could help You,
Failte, Michael
