In attempting to justify subjective probability, Bruno de Finetti
created the notion of philosophical coherence. According to his
theory, a probability assertion is akin to a bet, and a bet is
coherent only if it does not expose the wagerer to loss if their
opponent chooses wisely. To explain his meaning, de Finetti created a
thought-experiment to illustrate the need for principles of coherency
in making a probabilistic statement. In his scenario, when someone
states their degree-of-belief in something, one places a small bet for
or against that belief and specifies the odds, with the understanding
that the other party to the bet may then decide which side of the bet
to take.

Thus, if "Bob" specifies 3-to-1 odds against a proposition A, his
opponent "Joe" may then choose whether to require "Bob" to risk $1 in
order to win $3 if proposition A is found to be true, or to require
"Bob" to risk $3 in order to win $1 if the proposition A is not true.
In this case, it is possible for "Joe" to win over "Bob". According to
de Finetti, then, this case is incoherent.

I'll give you 10 to 1 odds that Subjectivism is crap.

Not if your really special... if your an Xist then Subjectivism is
just a means to an end. I can't get over how many people seem to want
hard solid rules about existence. Not only is that BORING, it's also
profoundly myopic in vision.

Is the notion of philosophical coherence itself coherent?

I'm a practical kind of guy. If figure it's easier to play the twenty
quetions game and then figure on five percent true for each correctly
answered question. But don't let me stop you from entertaining these
fanciful theories on the nature of truth.

You cannot win if you do not play, you can not lose if the other
player has to lose. I think it's pretty simple.

Well I'm the opposite of practical, I am fanciful because I was born
in Fantasia and this world will become like that or else. I'm so sick
and tired of dealing with beings that just can't project their
imaginations upon the world, so irritated by the hungry void in their
heads that it is nothing less than my mission to fancify this place up
as much as possible to unleash, and I'm really serious about this, the
Night of Slack itself... Forever

The Night of Slack? Is that scheduled for October or November of this
year? I forget, and really it's the sort of thing one should remember.

I have other plans that evening anyways, and was planning on being out of
town. Have fun though.

well it'll probably get extended to dec 23 for obvious necronomical
reasons, i mean the way things are going now i really wouldn't be
terribly suprised but don't hold me to it, it seems to run around a
lot... you should see all the aliens around now... i mean the martian
stickers have gone up appreciably since i got my black hole oracle
staff from my big brother... lots of sexy venusians but i'm not
entirely sure about them not yet anyway... even got some robochicks
from saturn... I really do hang out with JFK... life is wild right now
I really have nothing to complain about.... I swear to you the sexy
theatre people have a portrait of a young G.G. Gordon in their
home...

Damn it's great being Me.
