has been presented out of context and without proper attribution (i.e.,
date, specific piece it was quoted from).
Out of context it is basically meaningless, just a "provocative" quote.
I can only surmise that it is from later in Artaud's life, maybe after his
institutionalization for schizophrenia. One of the manifestations of his
schizophrenia was a fear and loathing of the body (his body) and he sort of
post-facto rationalized this pathology by references to gnosticism in his
writing.
So it has a schizophrenic's personal psychological meaning... a talented,
passionate schizophrenic, yes, but still a schizophrenic.
In addition, looking for "meaning" in ANY kind of surrealism, let alone
Artaud's very personal, psychological and schizophrenic brand of surrealism,
is a fool's errand. It's not going to fit into your deanie frame.
Read the whole damn essay and don't be looking for quotes you can wear like
a t-shirt slogan.
Get the Sontag Artaud collection and read a few more essays. There's good
biographical material in it.
