I imagine it might prove economical to heat-a/c them from a common
source. We could remove the engines and sell them for parts.
And what's driving me to distraction about this notion is that it almost
sounds feasible. Located properly, you could probably keep the
occupancy rate pretty steady. It'd be kitschy, but in a useful way.
So lead me from temptation. Tell me exactly HOW horribly wrong this
could go.

Wonders of the modern legal system...You can buy a camper and
live in it. You can rent a camper to someone else, and they
can live in it. Remove the engine from a bunch of them and
call it a motel...YOU CRIMINAL!
Things that are inherently not-for-the-handicapped should be
exempted, like cabins you have to hike to.

I'm usually happy to oblige great idea-people with a list of reasons
why it can't work, but in this case, I think you may be onto
something. Recognize, that you're basically creating a trailer park,
but there are worse things than that; it all depends on how it's done.
The picture someone submitted of a redneck mansion, shows that it can
be rather appealing.
How far north/south are you? That would make a difference. The
centralized heating and cooling is a good idea. If you're off away
from other housing, an outdoor wood burner could heat them all
efficiently - just burn good dry wood, rather than the slow smolder
most of those burners use, so it's more heat than smoke. The same
water pipes can be used for cooling in the summer.
This would also be an ideal situation to save money in the long run,
by installing solar and/or wind generated electricity, or solar water
heating.
If you have a dual degree in Hotel-Motel Management & Small engine
repair, you and Sally Struthers could just make all run again. It
would be the "Mystery Motel". You go to sleep in the Bus and wake up
after being drive to a completey differnent town!
Just think of the fun! Waking up in a tour bus and ot knowing where
the fuck you are! Its would be the total Music Star experiance!

mansions on wheels for the talent. Most have a master bed room, then a
set of bunks in front of the master bedroom, and bathroom squeezed
somewhere in there, and then a dry or wet bar/kitchen, maybe with a
microwave, and then some type of parlor. Most are not owned by the
talent. They're are rented or leased. Shit a new one costs damn near
a million dollars these days. Blow a transmission, they'll put
another five in that mother fucker before they think about it. Also,
when involved with a record label the second bill, or B groups get the
left overs. Yeah, there's some really old ones on ebay off and on from
JoeyBob Buttfuck but big name buses, they donate them to their country
western museum or some shit like that. ONe of the points is, they're
so fucking expensive they keep them on the road until they are worn
the fuck out. Then they gut em and turn them into refurbished and
lease them out cheaper.
Diesel coaches are my hobby and I kind of keep an eye on them. What's
selling, what's available, etc. and lately I've seen a few talent
owned, Old, late 60's early 70s buses but you've never heard of
JoeyBob Buttfuck and what woudl be the point of saying you can spend
the night in MR. Buttfuck's bus. And that's just for starters.

Yeah, my notion was they'd be pitched toward couples and couples with
kids. Sort of an enhanced double, rented out at rates to compete with
family suites in middling motels.

Do bands, especially the Buttfucks, pay attention to who'd had the bus
before them?
Well, in answer to your first question, A list talent (talent is the
individual or band) is probably going to have a brand new one from the
leasing company everytime they go out on tour. You might be able to
talk to the secretary at the coach leasing co. and she might know
something. But then again, sometimes labels just lease them and who
knows where they're going to be at any particular time.
You can try googling up entertainer coaches and it may give you an
idea. Most of them just give you the year of the coach and the make.
Very few individuals own their own touring bus. Neil young does, but
you ain't touching his. WEll, you probably could, but you're pockets
would have to be very, very, very fucking deep. Usually C list bands
own their own when their starting out because they're doing all of
their own production, promotion, transportation, etc. but as an
example, finding the bus that the Grateful Dead used on their 77 tour
of the west would probably be a mother fucker. I think they owned it
at that point. I know their generic party bus that they owned at that
time has recently been for sale for a rediculious figure and it didn't
move, plus it was a crown it was an ex-school bus, not a coach. Eddie
Munster owned it or something and it was in some museum in Ohio.
Nobody would buy it. Just a piece of shit old bus.
So, finding a pedigree on a particular coach for who it carried for
the most part would be really hard.
And if you did succeed what are you going to get? A shell? All the
mechanical systems will be worn out. the Heaters are propane. The AC
might have strip heaters in them, but they'll be old worn out AC
units. Most of them do not have showers, they just have a shitter.
Entertainment coaches are mostly used now for point A to B
transportation and maybe to roll a joint in at intermission. The
talent doesn't have to wait for the crew to break down teh equipment
they're on their way so they can get to the Hotel in the next city to
get some more sleep.

Probably the best counter-argument to trying this is that there hasn't
been any chorus of "Yes! I wanna stay in one!" in reply to my
mentioning it. If there WERE a ton of people enthusiastic about it, it
might be worth it to fake a bunch of entertainment coaches, but that
doesn't seem to be the case.
