SCIENTISTS will today unveil results from the first
large-scale human trial into a vaccine for nicotine
which could see people immunised against addictions
to smoking within the next five years...
The three trial drugs, which are taken as a course
of between four and six injections, work by stimulating
the production of antibodies in the blood. These
antibodies stop nicotine from entering the brain and
producing the addictive sensation craved by smokers...

Good! About time someone did something serious about keeping the filthy
Pink masses from taking up smoking.
Fewer people smoking means fewer people stinking up the air that I HAVE
TO BREATH!
Because, as a SubGenius, it is ALWAYS all about WHAT I DESIRE!
And I desire air that doesn't stink of used smoke that's been in close
contact with the mucous membranes of goddamn Pink normworms!

I was a first hand witness to a clinical trial of a "revolutionary" new
drug that was alleged to have the ability to block the rush dope fiends
got from shooting heroin...
Same concept, really.
The poor fuckers who got the "live" drug (rather than the double-blind)
suffered from uncontrollable sedation, slurred speech, the staggers...
all of the same fucking effects as a dope nod, but without the
"drawbacks" of getting high. Plus they all ended up shooting dope on
top of it anyway, just 'cause that's what they did for fun.
The thing I get weird about with these nicotine cessation drugs is that
us humanoids have a whole bunch of receptor cells that seem designed to
specifically accept nicotine
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nicotinic_acetylcholine_receptor)...
whether or not nicotine is actually a drug of choice. What the HELL is
going to happen with a wide spectrum drug that hits these receptors?
I remember the short-lived and disastrous l-tryptophan debacle of the
early 90s. Will we see a replay?
I've found myself appreciating Gauloises Fine Cut more and more for my
hand-rolled cigarettes. The smell makes it appear heavy, but in
actuality it's a nice mellow smoke... not really much stronger than a
smoke-cured shag like Samson. But it is definitely not for "light"
tobacco enthusiasts. A couple of these and a mug of espresso will
definitely give you the strength you need to clean your living room.
I've found a good cheap source for fine hand-rolling tobaccos at
http://www.lilbrown.com out of Yakima WA. You can also buy ordinaire
tobacco like Zig Zag there too.
The Gauloises is $2.70 per pouch (makes about 30 cigarettes)...cheaper
if you buy bulk. In NYC a pack of Gauloises or Gitanes was around
$9.00. Street price on the hand-rolling pouch is $5... if you can find
it.
I've also found that the Peter Stokkebye Amsterdam Shag and Stockholm
Blend are just as good, if not better than, traditional heavy shags
like Drum, Samson, Jester and Bali Shag. And they're LOTS cheaper...
but you can only buy it in 10 oz. cans (but, PS 10 oz. costs $14...
Samson 5 oz costs $9). A 10 oz. can makes about 200-250 cigarettes.
Stokkebye's American tobaccos are sold under the McClintock brand.
They're acceptable.
Invest in some hand rollers and papers... the PS doesn't include
papers. lilbrown has a great deal on Rizla French-style papers... $15
for 50 books of 50.
Since I started doing this, I've smoked less (fresher, better, stronger
tobacco = want less, having to make a cigarette each time=
short-circuits habit mechanism) and gotten my per "pack" cost down
under a buck.
So FUCK YOU. I'll choose my carcinogens. I can put out my cigarettes. I
know damn well people aren't gonna put out their cars.
> So FUCK YOU. I'll choose my carcinogens. I can put out my cigarettes. I

The anti-smoking groups claim that 1 in 5 smokers will contract a smoking
related illness at some point. 1 in 5!! Sounds scary! Looked at from the
other direction, 80 percent of smokers will NEVER contract a smoking related
illness. EIGHTY PERCENT!!! Smoke 'em if you've got 'em, I say!!
Addiction to nicotine has made the tobacco companies rich for years.
Now addiction to nicotine will make the anti-smoking industry rich for years!

I've had in mind a bass effect that, by splitting the signal,
doppler-shifting one up and the other down, would produce a binary beat
four or five octaves below the original signal. Since the actual sound
produced would be within the freq range of the amp (the low octave
"note" is the result of phase cancellation in the air), it would be able
to extend the range of bass instruments well below the freq response
range of any amp.
It's just been *so* long since I've worked with analog design that I
haven't got a clue where to begin. Hell, the other day I had to google
Ohm's Law just to figure out how to bias a frickin' LED...
Might anyone here be interested in working up such a device?

It's not targetting the receptors, it's targetting the nicotine itself,
with a view to making it incapable of crossing the blood-brain barier.

I never imagined I'd have ethical misgivings about something designed to
reduce the damage done by smoking.
The obvious temptation will be to vacinate one's teenagers, even against
their will, so that they cannot become addicted to nicotine as a result
of peer pressure. But it will also prevent them from choosing to smoke
(or at least choosing to enjoy smoking) in adulthood.
So what other things might we decide to vacinate our children against in
due course?
Alcohol? Motorbike riding? Hang-gliding?
Separated parents who've had a bad experience in relationships might
feel that their offspring would be better off not falling in love with
anyone.
Mass groups of people could be innoculated against interest in day time
soaps, and reality TV shows (actually, that's probably not a bad idea).

I'd get a DOD FX33 Buzz Box
One knob for the octave, two EQ knobs and one for Level.
Turn the Octave (heavy) knob down and you have a pedal
similar to the Grunge pedal (another underrated noise pedal
with lots of good sounds, all of them awful, but nonetheless useful).
This distortion is a bit more trebly than the grunge, but only slightly.
Turn the heavy knob up and you get more and more noise as the
octave comes in. It's easy to get lots of sounds with this pedal,
all of them awful, so this pedal is very easy to use. It is only a
stompbox after all, I don't see how any stompbox can get less
than a 9 or 10.
Sound Quality: 10
I use a tele with a DM2, BD2, Rat2, EH Frequency Analyser and
either this pedal or an MXR Blue Box.

I wonder if Keith Richards will ever win a Wallace Berry Award:
http://societymusictheory.org/index.php?pid=30
"They designed real organ pipes of exceedingly great width and length.
The first of these was six feet in diameter and seventy five feet long.
These designs were tested outdoors, securely propped against protective
sound-absorbent walls. The investigators stood at a great distance. Two
forms of these infrasonic organ pipes were built. The first utilized a
drive piston which pulsed the pipe output. The second utilized
compressed air in a more conventional manner.
The main resonant frequency of these pipes occurred in the "range of
death", found to lie between three and seven cycles per second. These
sounds could not be humanly heard, a distinct advantage for a defense
system. The effects were felt however. The symptoms come on rapidly and
unexpectedly, though the pipes were operating for a few seconds. Their
pressure waves impacted against the entire body in a terrible and
inescapable grip. The grip was a pressure which came in on one from all
sides simultaneously, an envelope of death.
Next came the pain, dull infrasonic pressure against the eyes and ears.
Then came a frightening manifestation on the material supports of the
device itself. With sustained operation of the pipe, a sudden rumble
rocked the area, nearly destroying the test building. Every pillar and
joint of the massive structure bolted and moved. One of the technicians
managed to ignore the pain enough to shut down the power supply."

Sound like it's worth looking into - But:
The probs I've had with octave boxes are that every one I've seen needs
to use a "distort", as they require a near-square wave to do a "divide
by two" through some form of switching. I even built one in high school
that used just that - a small cap to bust the signal to a square wave,
and a divide-by-two ttl logic chip.
These boxes have rarely worked properly below the twelfth fret, and if
you want to play "clean", you're out of luck. Also, eventually they drop
out of the frequency range the amp is able to reproduce.
Now, a couple of weeks ago, I was sitting in the Jack in the Box up on
Balboa in Northridge, having my lunch, and an unusually long freight
train rolled by. About a minute into it, I noticed a slow rolling
phase-cancellation vibrato blowing through the foundation. There was
nothing I could detect in the track-joint bumping sounds, etc, that
matched the periodicity of the vibe. Then it occured to me that what I
was feeling was the result of half the train moving away (producing a
doppler shift to a lower frequency) and half the train still approaching
(doppler-shifting to a higher frequency) that was producing the stable,
sustained and quite impressive vibe blowing through the joint.
Employing such a doppler shiting method to a clean bass signal would
produce signals that are withing the amp's optimal reproduction range,
and set up a stable, visceral vibe in the room, with no distortion. The
ability to shift the vibrato to either an octave of the original signal,
or time it to the beat, would be a matter of practical application --
and timing it to the beat would probably be an easier calculation re the
freq shift.

Even just today, I got another Guitar Center sale book out of my mailbox.
They list all kinda boxes, usually single effect or four effects in one box,
and _they say_ that they'll put any kind of effect into a box!
So, I'm not giving up on them yet for designing your thing--
Do you want to e-mail them, or should I?
Also, they're only a couple of blocks from here, so I could stop by
and ask them, but you never know who'e working there so it's
sometimes helpful and sometimes not.

Thanks, I'll check that out. The people working the store in Sherman
Oaks have usually been very clued-in and helpful, so maybe a trip there
would be worthwhile too. Of course, my wife will panic, since visits
there inevitably seem to inflict noticable damage ponts on my checking

Hear it, no, but you become *very* aware of your lower "chakras" after
being in the room with that for a while. And I consider syncing that
vibe to the beat - preferably an octave of the key (e.g. A = 440cps x 60
/ 2^8 = 103.125bpm) - essential psychadelic technique.

Years ago, I saw "Earthquake" at a theatre. In either corner of the
balcony was a really large bass bin. During the quake scenes, they
cranked these up with some serious rumble below the perceivable-note
range... just the RRRRRRRRRRRRR. People lak t'shat. Cheap, effective,
amusing and offering fewer side-effects than, say, dropping 'cid and
sitting on the front row of the balcony for "The Empire Strikes Back."
