I was just listening to Slayer, Cast Down from God Hates Us All.

I always liked them because of the Screaming Death Bands, they Scream
the best.

See, I understand music theory. But normally, I intentionally try NOT
to think about it when I listen to music. I don't want to.

But the last couple of days, I have been listening to music in terms
of music theory whether I wanted to or not. Sometimes I just get
something in my head and I can't get it out.

And a lot of musicians I normally like I have been getting really
irritated by. It's the same old half-dozen musical cliches, over and
over again. Verse chorus verse and the three-chord-trick.

So this song by Slayer, who I usually think of as a better example of,
well, kind of a gimmick band (Screaming Death Bands), and listening to
this song I realize it actually has real structure.

It has a really GOOD structure. It has a meaningful structure.

Holy crap. These guys really know what they're doing.

It has complexity and meaning. It has counterpoint and thematic
development. It's episodic.

Those smartass motherfuckers.

But don't worry, Mikey. Frank Zappa is still the most Important
musician.

It is so characteristic, that just when the mechanics of reproduction are so vastly improved, there are fewer and fewer people who know how the music should be played.

I don't like the basic 4/4 verse, chorus, verse, chorus, solo, chorus
songs they make now. If you cheange the time signature it's still the
same. Thats why i like Tool coz' you wont have any idea what signature
the song is and they seldom do the mainstream formula of songs. And
mostly it aint about the lyrics.

I just found a recording of that on youtube. I have heard it before. I
thought it was Mettalica at the time. When I was young, peer pressure made
me have to pretend to like this kind of music. Now that I don't give a fuck
what people think, I listen to a lot of blues music and noncommercial
country music. All the classic rock stations that I use to listen to are
playing top 10 hits from the 80's. I didn't like most of that crap the
first time it was overplayed on the radio.

As a Slayer fan from the mid '80s let me just say that they have always
had that little something extra that sets them apart.

They get castigated for having a satanic theme, but if anyone takes the
time to analyze the political/social commentary in their lyrics based on
a timeline of when their albums were released, one would see that they
don't pull any punches pointing out the frailty of US / world /
religious politics, and current events.

Musically they generally don't over complicate things, but you are right
Joe, the structure and timing of their songs are what has always kept me
coming back.

After playing live shows for over 20 years, they never leave you
hanging. If you ever get a chance check them out.

Really? And what is it that a COMPLETE FUCKING LAUGHABLY STUPID
FUCKING PUTZ like you "understands" about "music theory"?

What would be the French sixth chord in Ab minor (i.e., spell out the
chord). If you can't answer this (and I know you can't), you don't
know shit about "music theory", asswipe. You are such a fucking joke.
Someone should really put a joke like you out of its misery.

I always found the Brazilian metal band Sepultura kind of cool. In a
Rammstein sort of way.

they had wierd timing , not so much like Meshuggah (who if you listen
uses time signatures a mathematician would have difficulty working
thru)

Rammstein is a love of mine, as is Laibach, but then I get turned on
by deep growling germanic voices ^_^ (I recognize Milan Fras is
Slovenian but he sings in German predominantly)

Its unfortunate that Mikey is so deeply attached to the thought that
there can only be one type of music, else he would realize that the
basic components of song structure are universal despite genre.

This is where Slayer succeeds. They have consistently been faithful to
the basic rules of song progression. The thing i dislike about most nu-
metal (or what ever it is called this week) is the tendency to try use
the claim of creative experimentation to wash away the failings of the
various players in the group.

You want creative experimentation, try VOLK by Laibach, you know the
songs already, they just did them differently.

Listen to the song "Cast Down" from the album "God Hates Us All", by
Slayer, and explain why the thematic development is different from a
typical pop song. If you can't, you are a fucking joke and don't know
shit about what you are talking about.

If you have never heard the song, then you really don't have any idea
what you are talking about, do you?

You know, Slayer seems to have this effect on assclowns. There was
another butt pirate who used to post here, by the name of Iceknife,
who used to go into absolute paroxysms whenever I said "Slayer Rules"
on this newsgroup. I think he's dead now.

depends, for ease of eating I would de-bone them. Stew them a long
time tho, I would guess, not unlike squirrel they can be tough, add a
can of beer or some red wine to break down some of the sinew-like
tissues.

WELL DUHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!
Why do you think I started this chinchilla farm anyways, huh?

Like in that movie, "Flypaper"
(which is ABSOLUTELY HILARIOUS),
"Once you fuck a duck," he tells his partner in crime,
"you have to snap it's neck because you do too much
damage to it while fucking it for it to survive."

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0132165/

yeesh, I hope I still have that here.
i'm stuck on here cuz i can't find anything
worthy of watching lately.

"King Of New York" last night was okay,
but instead of relying on the audience's
suspension of disbelief it creates a new way out,
Dispensation of Reality
(in small doses, just enough
to see it make any sense at all.)

This way, instead of shutting-down and believing
everything on the screen, one decides how much
they decide to believe or not.

Kinda like those salt shakers with the three
sets of holes in the top and the spinny thing
too choose how fast or wide the shaker pours.
