We have 4 skunks living under our shed, and each time we see them go out
at night and we cover up the hole where they went in, they find another
way to get back in there. What can we use to make this home
unattractive to them. As we live in a subdivision in Mississauga,
Canada they seem to find lots to eat. I do not want to try to trap them
or poison them, all I want to do is have them go away and not come back.

We have been told that Mothballs can keep them out, or disuade them from
coming back, do you have any suggestions. I tried to run the water
under the shed and possibly flood them out, but unfortunately when I
built the shed I graded it to prevent water build up under the shed.

We are desperate for assistance. We have not had them spray yet, and we
don't want them too. We look forward to your response and suggestions.

Well, frankly I'm not surprised. Living as you do, in Mississauga.
Hazel McCallion has given skunks lots to eat out your way. The ones
that don't get fed properly, well, somehow they make it to downtown TO.
They live under MY deck. I must have had 14 mississauga skunks, at one
time or another, living under there.... one of them sprayed my dog -
twice.

Forget mothballs, Don dear, the ones in my neighbourhood eat them for
lunch. Skunks like mice, insects, rotten veggies, stuff like that --
have you considered starting a feeding frenzy in your neighbour's back
yard? Throw it over there after midnight.... It's a thought......

or disuade them from
> coming back, do you have any suggestions.

Ok, to get serious, do you have companies out your way who do trapping.
We got them in downtown here -- you call 'em up -- they come out and set
up traps. Some of them put stuff in traps that make the skunks go to
sleep for a little while.... then they remove them to the wild. It'll
cost you a bit -- not tooooo to much, but they do work. If you live on a
busy street, there's always the chance they'll get hit by cars....that
happened to two of the ones living in my back yard. Always on a Monday
morning, right in front of the place....stunk for days. I kept hearing
Don McLean -- 'dead skunk in the middle of the road'....don't know which
was more awful -- the smell or the sound in my head.

I tried to run the water

Smart boy. Still, I have visions of your shed floating out into Lake
Ontario....sorry if I giggle .... <snerk>

Understood. My dog got sprayed twice (by the same skunk although I
didn't take ID at the time) which may say something about the stupidity
of my dog -- or the chutzpah of the skunk, am not sure which. The
raccooon rabies scare has not spread as far as Mississauga, so don't go
flying off the handle for now. Besides, skunks and raccoons aren't
really all that friendly, you know? Where you keeping your garbage?
Put it in containers away from stuff they can reach. That's a start.

My dad once put up metal sheets10 or 12" high around the under part of
our garage -- shoved them deep down into the dirt -- covered up the
digging areas. Maybe that'll help. Stuff costs though -- these are
pests...

> We have not had them spray yet,

Lucky you. Go get a few large cans of Heinz best tomato juice to keep
on hand, just in case. You can always use them for bloody mary's if the
skunks go away. Keep your pets inside too. And don't go laying down on
the ground and sticking your face under things to see if you can see
them. The voice of experience talking here -- they got my uncle in the
chest when he did that.

Honey bun -- there isn't much you can do. Don't feed them - that's
probably the first thing to do. Then call in a wild-life remover of
wild-life animals. Yellow pages. Either that or a 22 calibre. But I
don't recommend that. I'm an animal lover.

By the way - did you know, this isn't *actually* a newsgroup about
"skunks"? It's a writing group newsgroup (we just took the name cause
it was pre-named, handy and empty) -- writers post their works here --
it's a long story. But what the hell -- how would you know....easy
mistake. I'm just a writer -- taking a break on a holiday monday --
getting ready to barbeque...hamburgers with melted blue cheese and a
caesar salad....mmmm-mmmmmmm good.

Anyways.....

let me know what happens. Really. I *do* have several in the back yard
right now...it is right odorous downtown here - specially in the
mornings. I know you all out that way think downtown TO stinks -- but
this probably ain't what you had in mind.

How's things out Hazel's way? I sit with bated breath, awaiting her
next altercation with Mel. Two aged dipsy-doodle dandies fighting it
out. Some idiot asked me the other day where's all the tax money
going..... <sigh>

I have a "Welsh Witch" friend who also lives in Mississauga, maybe she
could
caste a spell on them for you. You can find her, mainly over in
alt.writing
where I belong, but it was a nice day, take a walk in the meadow, meet
some
of the nice folks over here, I thought. Just passing through.

Get a cheap radio and find a classic rock station.
Leave it going in the shed, they don't like continous noise.
Toss a few mothballs into the holes they dig
to enter.

They'll leave.

Look around and try to find what they are eating.
Is dog or cat food being left where they can
get it? Trash bags left where they can raid that?
Take care of any obvious attractants.

Slim Whitman. Constantly. Of course, you may have to resist your own
urge to pack up and head for parts unknown.

I'm getting pretty tired of people slamming Slim. Besides, Wauchope
probably can't wait six weeks for delivery.

Ok, Geno, calm down before you split your colostomy bag. I admit to the
barest trickle of a tear at hearing Slimmy yodel his way through Indian
Love Call.

I have heard that if you soak a rag with amonia and put in there, it will
make them leave. To check that they are gone, put flour around and watch
for footprints to make sure that they are gone.....then try and close up the
places where they are getting in. I have not tried it so don't know how
well this works.

I had a skunk living under our back porch. I tried all manner of
horrible smells, as well as trying the plug the entrances.
Eventually I live-trapped the beast -- and then discovered the
reason she was so persistent was that she a had a litter of six
little skunklets there.
