"We're all going to die..."

...announced Floyd as he swung his brief case onto the counter at
Shirley's Kitchen, next to Brad who was already on his second coffee
of the morning.

Brad rolled his eyes and muttered, "Oh shit, are you on that death
rap again?"

"No way, Brad. It's true we're all gonna die. I have proof that it's
true, the human race is going extinct."

"Yeah, sure. Show me."

Floyd signalled Shirley for a cup of java and slid unto the next
stool, grabbing his brief case and snapping it open. He dug through a
bunch of loose papers and finally, grabbed a camera from underneath
them. Without a word, he brought the camera up and shot a full-face
portrait of Brad, who was blinded from the flash.

"Damn it, Floyd, I have to see."

"Yes, you do. Look at the picture," Floyd said, dialling up his
'Review' feature to display the photo he had just taken.

"Who the hell is that?" Brad said when his eyes adjusted and his
vision returned.

"That's all that's left of you," said Floyd.

"My God, howcum I don't see that in the mirror?"

"You must not be paying attention."

Laughing hysterically, Floyd ran from the restaurant and disappeared
in the coyote-infested woods.

Brad tuned to Shirley, "Am I in the Twilight zone?"

She nodded in the affirmative.

"Really?" Brad felt his face all over.

After a considerable time in the coyote-infested woods (wondering why
they chose this round-about route from Mexico), Floyd returned to find
pensive Brad on his usual stool in the diner.

"So, Floyd, how did this all come about?"

'When the population reached 6.8 billion, the whole system started to
collapse and mankind began evolving but because of the large number of
evolution-deniers, we didn't notice the changes. Let's face it, if we
had noticed that we now had two noses, there would have been an
outbreak of nasal fatique syndrome, as we started to exhaust ourselves
picking them. Not to mention how the two mouths would concern us. You
did notice the darkening of your skin, which, in your case, happened
before the main evolutionary phase kicked in...remember Woodstock?"

"So how come I haven't heard this from anyone else?" Brad asked.

"Because it takes a simple man to see simple things,"said Floyd, "But
I still don't understand how or why they are smuggling illegal
immigrants into the States through the Secret Island, so I guess I
could be simpler still."

With that, Floyd ordered a cup of coffee and a piece of lemon meringue
and the two men sat together in silence. communicating in a new,
secret, non-verbal way.
