I've been on Accutane for about 10 days now. My lips feel like
carboard. They are peeling, cracking, and I can't even open my mouth
all the way. I apply chap stick 5-10 times a day, but it doesn't seem
to help very much. Any suggestions?

There are better lip moisturizers then Chap Stick. Perhaps Carmex would be a
better choice? You can also put a little vaseline on your lips before you go to
bed. This can help a lot.

I wanted to respond to tell you that I am having the same problem, I
started taking accutane on 11-15-98. My dosage is 40mg two times a
day. So, I have been on the medication for 6 days now. My lips are
very chapped and like you I have to apply chap stick to them very
often, (several times an hour) I am now using Blistex Medicated Lip
Ointment. This seems to work better than just regular chapstick. If
you find a better solution, please let me know. I am 30 y/o who has
had acne since I was 17 years old. I have been on every antibiotic,
topically and orally and none have worked for long. I decided that it
was time that I sent my oily skin into remission. I have read so much
about accutane that I decided to try it. The first day I started, that
eventing I broke out in an itchy rash on my arms, trunk and legs, it
was terrible, but I said that after dealing with acne for 13 years that
I would tolerate some discomfort. The rash cleared up after about 3
days and now just my lips and face is very dry. I haven't even been
using anything to wash my face with, just warm water. My face is red,
it looks like I have bad windburn. I want to maybe try a moisturizing
creme. Do you have any recommendations? Well, enough about me, please
let me know how you are doing, I think it's ironic that we both started
this powerful drug at the same time. My e-mail address is
lrs...@dhr.state.ga.us. I look forward to hearing from you.

Thanks

I use LABELLO premium lip treatment. It provides good moisture and does not
give that greasy look. You can find it in the local drug store with the
chapsticks and other lip treatments.

The EXTREMELY dry, chapped lips was one side effect that I absolutely hated
about Accutane. In fact, the side effect was so bad that if I didn't put
anything on my lips, my lips would look like they were about to fall off
from the dryness.

I used lip moisturizers such as Carmex, but my lips looked so glossy that it
seemed as if I was wearing lipstick (which isn't such a great look if you're
a guy). So can anyone recommend a strong lip balm or moisturizer that won't
give off such a glossy or greasy look?

Mick, try ChapStick brand "LipMoisturizer". It comes in a blue tube and
is much softer than regular chapstick, and has an spf of 15! This and
Aquaphor ointment got me through Accutane treatment. During the day I
preferred the "LipMoisturizer" because it stayed on a bit better and was
not shiny like the Aquaphor. I still use the "LipMoisturizer" every
day. It is sometimes difficult to find so when I do see it I'll buy 3
or 4 tubes. Best of luck to you!
