don't forget
Ryan Fabry (super good... part of the original plan b team)
Damon Byrd (super tech... did big spin noselides down handrails..)
Laban Pheidias (if you don't know this guy... yer a kook)
basically the whole invisible team turned invisible after they went out of
business... minus John Reeves..

Danny Sargent retired a long time ago, although no doubt he still skates up
in the Pacific NW. Sometimes he'll be mentioned in obscure Thrasher
references in trash.
Last I heard of Rick Ibaseta he was skating in NYC but not sponsored or
anything, just living the dream I guess.

Tom Penny -- this guy drives me nuts. It'd be like Michael Jordan spending
a season in the NBA then disappearing, or Tiger Woods just winning the
Masters and disappearing. I mean, personally, I feel that if I was blessed
with a gift like that, I'd try to share it, even if I was determined to do
it on my own terms. I don't know him so it's hard to judge, but with so
many people out there who love skateboarding and would trade everything
they've ever had for skills like that... it just seems wrong, somehow.
Yeah, I know, it's his life, but I wish they were my skills :P I'd be able
to stop programming for a living, that's for sure.

what's the real story on penny anway? i know he came to the states and
showed off his talent, then didn't like how the industry was exploiting
skaters or something and then bailed back to england. if that's true, i give
him mad props for deciding that he wasn't going to be an industry pawn. that

From what I hear from people in the industry, he is filming for the eS and
Flip videos a bit. I don't know how much truth there is to that. He is in
France, and the last time anyone really got footage of him was about a year
and a half ago when he was skating in Copenhagen and living there for a bit.
I did a study abroad there right after and everyone was talking about how he
would just get mad stoned and then rip this ramp in the hippie commune in
the middle of the city. There were two ads that popped up in the magazine
from that time. I don't know why he bailed, supposedly it was the pressure
and he didn't like being in the spotlight and hounded and all. At the
Tradeshow Arto said he had been at Tom's place in France, skating his ramp,
and that he would get bombed every night and pass out on the ramp then skate
it the next day, and that he was ripping.

I agree. I'm sure Penny did the thing that he needed to do. I can kind of
see how one might not be so stoked on the industry. It is almost like
porno. young kids break themselves trying to come up and get paid in shoes
for it (coke for porno hoes). You can't pay for knee surgery with koston
3's, no matter how fresh the color combo may be. Even when you go pro the
money isn't substantial unless you're on the top of the game. The most
fucked up thing though is that not that many companies give their riders
health insurance. You would think that knowing they would be taken care of
if they got hurt would just give riders more incentive to get buck (wild
that is).

Penny surely could have made major bank. But I think that is a little more
attractive to Americans than to Europeans. If doing something you love to
do as a job ruins the enjoyment, then what's the motivation to keep doing
it? Might as well get some other job and skate on the side.

anyway, aside from the spread of new public park construction (which has
finally made it to Pittsburgh), i am really fucking tired of how large
skating has become. I think vibing is making a comeback, so maybe we are
headed back underground with this shit.

there used to be the attitude that skaters were members of a subculture
that thought for themselves. This may not have been true at all, but I
believed it and I think it made me pretty skeptical of the goals that alot
of my peers hold in the US. Maybe Penny just fealt the same way about
being pro. It's probably not all its cracked up to be, for some people.

There are advantages and disadvantages to what you're talking about. If
going back underground means ill-managed skater-run companies, bad business
practices, low profits, etc, then that isn't a good thing (not that skaters
can't run companies--but not everyone knows what they're doing). You're
right, you can't pay for surgery with Koston 3s, but there is something to
be learned from the "establishment" or "big business." I work for a
corporation, and there are downsides and benefits. I get great benefits and
great pay, and I like my what I do, but a lot of it still reeks of the
corporate yuppie lifestyle and capitalist, materialist greed. Everyone sits
around in cubicle and lives in the dot com world--it's straight out of
Dilbert. But if the industry can still be run by skaters, absorbing what
they can from big corporations, that is probably a better move overall then
going back underground, whatever that means. Skating can be big and not be
controlled by major corporations, although it will be damn hard. Anyway,
some standardization couldn't really hurt skating. If it becomes the norm
to have medical insurance, life insurance, profit sharing, retirement plans,
etc. as part of the professional skateboarding experience, then things would
be a lot better off for professional skaters. I mean, if a baseball player
gets injured, he doesn't get kicked off the team or forgotten; he gets
medical treatment and rehab and gets paid and gets his chance to come back
and contribute. There have been rumors about a skater union for years, but
nothing organized has ever happened. It's easy for us to sit here and say
"oh, I wish this shit was for back underground, fuh real," and heckle the
pro skaters who try to go after some big money or big sponsors, but most of
us aren't living the lives they have to lead. They gotta go out and bust
themselves for what is really pocket change in the world of professional
sports, never knowing when the bubble is going to burst, when they might get
injured, or who is going to help them out when they get injured. Paying for
medical insurance out of your pocket, not through your company, is horribly
expensive. There has to be some kind of balance that can be found. I'm
rambling because I'm a little loaded, sorry. I just don't think it is as
simple as everyone makes it out to be--let's go back underground! rah! fuck
the x-games! There's more than one side to all of this, and I try to see
the good and bad points of each.

He left Dogtown again. I can't remember how long ago it was--a year? two
years? That he had a profile in 411. That was his third stint as a pro
skater. He has very sporadic coverage, and is basically a slash dog. He's
still got good pop and can do salad grinds but he isn't into the flippery.

Dogtown doesn't have a team anymore.

I think my original message said it best, but I'll say it again, and more
succinctly: if you want to be a troll, go to skateboarding.com or
alt.flame.whatever. I don't even know what your comment is supposed to
mean, or imply. How old are you that you're being a usenet troll, trying to
stir up controversy and piss people off?

Uh, proves it in what way and with what logic? You aren't exactly making
sense either. I don't consider people mature if they dismiss other people's
messages as boring without even considering what was written. Maybe I hold
people to different standards, or expect more out of the
population-at-large, but if the Internet has proved anything, it's that
there are even more fucking morons than I ever dreamed existed, roaming
around with access to technology.

Why are you such a jerk? (Yeah yeah.. I know "Fuck you")

Anyways.. It's too bad the DT web site is just siting there doing
nothing for them. I'd like to order some stuff from them but the
ordering part of it isn't working and hasn't for months.

Outt..
Jeff.

It's because I can't resist retorting to trolls sometimes. I'm over it
though, anyone who picks the name of a hip-hop artist to use on message
boards, instead of something original, or *gasp* their own name, isn't
really worth sparring with. I put it on the same level of picking "Muska"
or "Ol' Dirty Smolik" as your sig. It just sucks when half-decent
conversations start and some fucker posts lame comments to half the messages
in the thread.
