Butternut squash soup. I love it, great winter soup. We grew some
this summer and have a couple of boxes stored in the garage. I
make some every couple of weeks so not to get fed up with it and
follow this recipe <http://tinyurl.com/muaxsnj6>, omitting the red
pepper and honey as it doesn't make any difference without them.

One of my favorites as well - the fresh ginger gives it a bite - but I
have trouble peeling and chopping them. I'll have to find that Youtube
vid on an easy way to do it without cutting your thumb off! And wow,
growing yer own. What makes Mary's recipe special is roasting the
veggies... and I will use double the red pepper and honey. I like it spicy.

We've been warned of a fierce winter storm headed this way that will
freeze everything from Canada through Texas. I'm sitting right on top of
TX. Our high Sunday will be 29F/-16C and dip down to 3F/1C! Lots of wind
advisories... so I'd better get busy wrapping water pipes.

But I still love winter better than stifling hot summers... I love to
snuggle down in my easy chain under my wooly Sherpa blanket and binge
watch old B&W film noir movies.

I just put butternut squash on my grocery list... oh, and fixin's for
broccoli cheese soup, another favorite. My little hand blender is really
coming in handy.

Hang in there Mr. Smith.

One of my favourite soups is curried cream of broccoli soup. It uses
the stems of the broccoli. My daughter used to practically live on it
when she was a poor university student. She'd go to the big
supermarkets and ask the produce staff if they had any free off cuts of
broccoli stems for her (imaginary) rabbit.

Amazing how resourceful she became when she preferred to spend the money
we gave her for food and living expenses on booze and pot.

Recipe: melted butter in which you sweat a chopped onion and chopped
broccoli stem. Add some curry powder and some chicken stock (from cubes
works just as well as posher stuff). Blitz it, add milk or cream and
reheat but don't boil.

There's 'spicy' and 'very spicy'. I grew some chillies this year
when I friend gave me some spare plants. Mrs Foxy put one of the
small chillies in with the roasted veg thinking it would add just
a little more spiciness to the soup. She won't be doing that
again, it was a Bird's Eye chilli and it nearly made my tongue
explode. I've made the soup with and without the red pepper and
honey and it really tastes the same to me. I think Mary Berry is
being a bit artsy with her recipe.

Brrrr! We got -8C/17F last winter which was the coldest we've had
for a long time. It killed a lot of my plants which I thought were
hardy. I used to be a refrigeration engineer when I was a lot
younger and thought nothing of working in a walk in freezer in
just my teeshirt and jeans, but I feel the cold now and don't
think I'd cope that well with your winter temperatures.

Yeah, just a bit.

> +anything means there's no chance of pipes freezing.

In London I didn't worry about the pipes and outside taps, but
when we moved here insulating the pipes in the garage and outside
tap was one of the first things I did. Lucky I did with the winter
we had.

Yes, this is pretty much what I do I use my veggie peeler on the
stalks/stems (easier on my blender), and canned evaporated milk . It's
creamy and I always have it on hand).

I don't drink cow's milk, use only almond milk in my cereal, etc.,
haven't used it in soups. It sure didn't set up well in Jello instant
pudding.

I rarely cook with fresh hot peppers, I have a Scotch Bonnet tongue
exploding tale of woe. Sometimes I'll use a jalapeno and cut out the
seeds and veins inside... good for Mexican dishes. I mostly use dry red
pepper flakes.
