Perhaps this was discussed in the thread on Ellen Corby (Grandma Walton)
going into the SC, but....

I saw one obituary of her that named her survivor as "her friend of 45
years"; this friend is female. I didn't see any other survivors named in
any other obituaries; given that this particular obituary was from a wire
service report, I can only conclude that this fact was edited out of the
other versions I saw.

So, was she a l_____?

Cheers, Fiona

Lord, yes! Will Geer. Very serious. Activist, even. Longtime partner with
Harry Hays, infamous founder of the Mattachine Society. Might have had
something to do with NAMBLA, too. Harry, not sure about Will. Old school
fags.

"Friend" of 45 years cited as survivor, & no others? Heck, that's enough
to send my lezdar into the "possibly quite totally definite" zone.

You go, Ellen. And Will Geer, that fabulous old-school lefty bisexual. No
wonder the Waltons were so cool, with this matriarch & patriarch!

Next we'll hear that those bootlegger sisters were really spiking
their "recipe" with LSD.

Goodnight John-boy,

Suni (AKA Suni Spice, and PrincessKitty...keeper of Danny Elfman and knower of
stupid trivia) The band sounded like a bunch of child prodigies running wild on
acid in Danny Elfman's home studio.

You're referring to "John Boy I" (Richard Thomas), right? Robert Wightman
was "John Boy II" during WWII. The casting director assigned to find
a replacement for Richard Thomas must have been momentarily possessed
by the spirit of Ed Wood to think that the relatively tall Wightman
could pass for the 5'8"-ish "John Boy I." I don't recall if Wightman
became a "gay icon" as well, though I can't see why he couldn't. After
"The Waltons," I guess Wightman's major role was playing the baddie in
"Stepfather III." Last fall I got to watch "Stepfather III" right as the
"John Boy II" episodes were coming up in "The Waltons" on TNN. It was
really bizarre to watch Wightman play the "dad from hell" one night and
sweet l'il John Boy the following night.

Speaking of "gay icon"--there's one episode in which "John Boy II"
(Wightman) has trouble finding a job in N.Y. and runs into an old buddy
who invites him to share his apartment...which turns out to be a small
one-bedroom place. I guess you could read homosexual overtones into
that episode (if you're as desperate for romance as I am).

Not to sound tacky...but is the guy who played Jim-Bob also the one
who's gained the most weight since the series went off the air???

Well he joined the series long after it peaked in ratings and quality, plus
he never kissed Jeff Daniels.

I missed something...did Richard Thomas kiss Jeff Daniels.

Yeah, I'd like more details myself. I assume (we all know how dangerous
that word is) this was in a stage play, maybe "Born on the 4th of July."
(Wasn't there a lot of buzz when the movie version came out about Tom
Cruise's character having to kiss some guy?) ANYWAY, in the case of Robert
Wightman (John Boy II) not getting to kiss Jeff Daniels...I'd say both
parties lost out on that one.

Of course he did -- in the Broadway production of FIFTH OF JULY. And,
nightly, idiots in the audience would yell, "Oh, John-Boy, no! Oh my
God, John-Boy is a fag!"

Lanford Wilson's play "5th Of July" in which Richard Thomas and Chris Reeve
both kissed Jeff Daniels during their respective runs.

And repeated the performance on American Playhouse.
