Maybe this is old gossip, but I don't remember reading it here. Someone
informed me that there was a rumor that Michael Ball was Prince Edward's lover.
Was this an item that was posted in this newsgroup?

I don't remember reading it here, but I could be wrong. If it's true, then
Prince Edward sure has great taste in men. Michael Ball is very handsome and
has a beautiful singing voice.

Is Michael Ball openly gay and out of the closet? I only know Ball because of
the PBS specials on the Les Miserables Anniversary Concert and Andrew Lloyd
Webber's Birthday Concert (I think that's what it was?) The one where Antonio
Banderas sang as the Phantom.

At one time Edward was working for the Really Useful Company and I believe the
rumors appeared during the run of ASPECTS OF LOVE. Recently addressed and denied in
the new-ish bio of Edward..though I have always heard it was true and that Edward
used to fly over to see Ball during the U.S. run of ASPECTS.

Darling, sweetie, this sort of thing is scripted by the
publicists for all gay celebrities. It is the oldest trick
in the book. Apparently, some poor daft fools still believe
this sort of rubbish, as evidenced by your silly post. Do
try not to be so gullable, will you, dear?

Note your words here, love. `Always says'. He's got that
little script memorised down pat, he does.

Nope, not even remotely out. In interviews, he always speaks about his

female partner (don't recall her name--she's a few years older than he
is and has at least one child of adult age), with whom he's cohabited

for several years. He always says something to the effect that they
have no intention of getting married because they're "happy as they
are". The first time I read one of these interviews (back when he was
appearing in Aspects of Love, I think), I was surprised as I'd assumed
he was gay from *other* stuff I'd read. Who knows? I've never heard of
an explicit link with Eddie Windsor...

You could try searching on the Sunday Times and Sunday Telegraph
websites to see if a recent interview (sometime in the last 3 months)
shows up. Links to both newspaper sites are on my webpage at:

When Stephen Gately of Boyzone came out this summer, there was a story in
Private Eye (usually reliable in these matters) that the delay of several
weeks between his decision to preempt an unfriendly outing by cooperating
with The Sun, and the actual publication of the interview was due to The
Sun putting pressure on him to out another closeted British pop singer with
whom he'd had a "romance", and Stephen's refusal to do so. Michael Ball was
one of the names some people guessed at as fitting that blind item, so at
least in some circles it seems to be assumed he's gay and closeted.

Learn to read, darling, sweetie. I never said he isn't gay, just that
he isn't out:

Fairly common news on the Musical actor/actress circuit, according to
my sister, who knows a few.

You're joking. Isn't Stephen Gately just a little bit young for Michael Ball?

I'm not saying there was anything to that guess, and nothing indicates that
Stephen has a thing for older men. Just that Michael Ball's name was
mentioned by some people as a possible candidate for "closeted British pop
star who had an affair with Stephen Gately", without any further
information to go on. (Of course, both share an unfortunate affection for
the music of Andrew Lloyd Webber.)
