In the new issue of Premiere magazine there is a short interview with
Faye Dunaway. When asked to comment on Bette Davis she declines in
such a way as to imply that there was bad blood between them. Does
anybody know in what film they worked together and what was the origin
of the bad blood?

TIA, Jack

Faye Dunaway portrayed Bette Davis in some film. The film was
not at all flattering towards Davis and subsequently she hated
everybody involved with it.

No, no, no. Both acted in a TV movie many years ago called "The

Dunaway kept everyone waiting for hours. Bette waited for NO ONE, and
spent her last years telling anyone would would listen about Dunaway's
rudeness to her (and the rest of the cast). It always sounded to me like
two star egos locked in combat.

As the story goes, Dunaway was consistently late on the set as she
agonized over make-up, costumes, hair and her performance, keeping Ms.
Davis and the extras waiting for hours during a very hot California
summer. Davis entertained the extras by telling stories and singing songs
as she quietly stewed over Ms. Dunaway's lack of professionalism.

Years later, an interviewer (I think it was Johnny Carson) asked if there
was anybody from her career with whom she would never work again. Did La
Davis take another opportunity for a potshot at on- and off-screen rival
Joan Crawford or abusive husband and co-star Gary Merrill. Nope. She
said, "Only one person--Fay Dunaway."

Jean: Thanks. You satisfied my curiousity. But now you've got me
wondering. If Faye Dunaway has portrayed both Bette Davis and Joan
Crawford, do you think there will ever be a remake of 'Whatever
Happened To Baby Jane' starring just Faye Dunaway?! :-)

The film was "The Disappearance of Aimee," a TV movie from 1976 about
evangelist Aimee Semple MacPherson. Dunaway played Aimee and Davis her
mother. I recall Davis railing against Dunaway in print for allegedly
unprofessional conduct. I'd have to track down one of my books about Davis
for more details.

They made a TV movie together, about Aimee Semple McPherson, in which
Faye played Aimee and Bette played the mother. During one of Bette's
last appearances on the Tonight Show, Carson asked her who was the
worst person she ever worked with. Bette said it was Faye and went on
for about 5 minutes about what a pain in the ass Faye Dunaway was.

Don't you have Davis confused with her archenemy Joan Crawford, who was
portrayed by Dunaway in "Mommie Dearest?" (Crawford was mercifully already
dead by the time the movie was made in 1981 and could only hate everyone
involved from the grave.)

Yes - you're right. I was confusing Bette Davis and Joan Crawford.
However, that realization only came to me early this morning, hours
after my inaccurate post was planted on the web for all to see.

Um, not really...Faye Dunaway portrayed Joan Crawford in "Mommie
Dearest", who was Bette Davis nemesis in those days of Hollywood.

Bette and Faye worked together in "The Disappearance of Aimee", where
Bette claims Faye was dishing out 'star' behavior like coming late to
shootings and holding up everyone else (including Bette), or coming to
the next days shoot drunk and stoned out...Bette said she would never
work with Faye after that movie, ever again...she kept her word.

Ah, but I must correct you, Mike - Bette and Faye did a TV movie together
called "The Disappearance of Aimee", about the 1920's evangelist Aimee Semple
MacPherson (spelling approximate). According to Bette in her muddled sort-of
autobiography "This 'n' That", there were a lot of delays because Faye would
keep everyone waiting while she had her hair, makeup, whatever touched up.
Bette felt she was being rude to all the other cast members and the many
extras working in the heat for a big crowd scene. So Bette kindly entertained
them by singing "I've Written a Letter to Daddy" from "Whatever Happened to
Baby Jane?"

Remember though, this is Bette's side of the story - I don't know Faye's.
From other things I've heard, both could be impossible to work with. And in
the above book, Bette always made herself out to be little Miss Always True
Artist and Professional. She even had one or two nice things to say about
Joan Crawford (but got down to some dirt later - Miss Davis had little
patience with women overly concerned about their appearance.)

If that last bit is a direct paraphrase, shouldn't it read: "Bette said she would NEVAH
work with Faye after that movie, EVAH again!"

I thought that I had seen every Bette Davis film that had been made,
but, recently, I found "The Star", which recounts the tale of a faded film
actress, who cannot accept the reality of passing time, and sagging chins.
She wins the chance to test for the supporting role of a bitter, plain,
older sister, then plays it as a vamp, after altering her makeup, to go
from frau to glamour-puss. She, it turns out, had optioned the play,
coveting the role of the 18 year old sister, as hers, years earlier. The
character undergoes a two stage salvation, first she sees the test, and
realizes how pathetically inappropriate it is, then, rushes from the world
of Hollywood, into the arms of her younger, studly lover, after a director
describes to her, a part that he thinks would be perfect for her, that,
unbeknownst to him, is pointedly a sumation of her life. With the
exception of the happy, ("Since I can no longer be a sex symbol, I'll
content myself to marry Mr. Perfectlywonderful, and live
happily-ever-after."), ending, it sounds like a presage to her real life.
Sorta sad.
Pink wishes
