No no no.....When Nadia defected, it was some OTHER guy she was
hooked up with...I don't know who, but I think it was a fellow Romanian
defector....maybe living in Florida? I am sure, however, it wasn't Bart
Conner.

This only confirms my suspicions that he's gay and closeted due
to his oppressive Mormon faith. Surely someone as hot as he could
easily due better than with an ugly cow like Nadia.

You might want to be sure & preface a statement like that with "IMHO", you
know...I have no particular opinion on the status of their marriage (for their
sakes, I hope they're happy, though), but I think Nadia's perfectly
attractive--she may not be a stereotypical blonde chittering bimbette, and she
definitely looks very Eastern European, but that's not necessarily a bad
thing...it's all a matter of what you like.

dish on that story, look through old issues of "Vanity Fair." Back about
five years ago, Barbara Grizzutti Harrison did one of the truly great
journalist teppanyaki numbers on the lovely Nadia. _This_ one is a _real_
piece of work. Nothing she can do these days, however, can top her days as
(alleged) mistress of record to the most loathed of the offspring of
Rumania's late and unlamented dictator (I doubt I can spell _his_ name
accurately at this hour of the morning) during the last and darkest days of
communism in that tormented country.
Anyway, if she's a beard, he's doing her at least as big a favour in
return. For them as knows her story, she ain't the wide-eyed innocent she
played on "Oprah" yesterday.

To the best of my knowledge, Bart Conner is not a Mormon and never has
been. I'm a Mormon; I was well acquainted in the mid-1980's with one of

about it.

Bart and Nadia have known each other, on some basis or another, for a
very long time. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but personally,
I think she is quite attractive, and I think it's quite unfair and rude
to call her an "ugly cow".

The man who helped Nadia escape from Romania was Constantin Panait.
I forget what his occupation was, but he was an experienced "refugee
smuggler", and I'm quite sure he was =not= a gymnast or coach.
Although it appeared at first that Nadia was romantically involved with
this guy, in retrospect I believe it's more likely that he was exploit-
ing her and that she was too scared and/or naive to know how to get out
of the situation. Please remember, the kinds of "survival skills" one
would learn in one of the most repressive and closed societies of modern
times (Ceausescu's Romania) are =not= the same as what would come natur-
ally to us in North America.

No. She arrived in the US first. After she got away from Constantin
Panait, she went to Canada and stayed for a while with a couple in Mon-
treal whom she knew from gymnastics. Later (I believe it was after one

Nicolae Ceausescu's son Nicu reportedly had an "interest" in Nadia and
apparently made advances at her (or at least made his interest known to
her). Her unwillingness to respond in kind probably had a lot to do
with her falling somewhat out of official favor in the last few years
of the Ceausescu era.
It should be kept in mind, BTW, that after Nadia defected in early
December 1989, Elena Ceausescu (the dictator's wife, and a power to
be reckoned with in her own right) personally ordered the liquidation
of the remaining members of the Comaneci family. The only thing that
saved them was the revolution that toppled the Ceausescu regime just
before Christmas of 1989.

I didn't see the Oprah show in question, so I can't comment on it
directly. But I've known quite a few people who lived in Romania and
other eastern European countries prior to the collapse of the Communist
dictatorships (of which Romania's was definitely one of the worst), and
I think people who have had to cope with that kind of life day in and
day out deserve a bit more slack than we, in our comfy, open society,
may be inclined to give them.

wouldn't have been the first woman who died, or was dragged away by the
Securitate, because she wouldn't go to bed with him.
In any case, whatever the truth about her conduct in Rumania, you're
absolutely right about people in comfortable positions -- people like me, I
mean -- judging her, or anyone else, who has lived through times like
