Thanks,

Wow....an Abdul bio.
I don't know about the abuse stuff.
What I can tell you is that Paula Abdul
is not her real name. "Abdul" was
whimsically taken from Kareem Abdul
Jabar. The joke was mixing the totally
american name, "Paula" with the
obviously eastern or muslim or arabic
or whatever name, "Abdul."
Good luck substantiating this though!
But it's true...
Ah, okay.
While you're at it, do they
know who killed Kennedy?
Guys! (Pout, pout) Did someone forget to turn Ian's sarcasm meter on? He
failed to detect it in a post that was fairly dripping.
Here's one to ask her fans -- ask them if it's true that that animated cat in
her video "Opposites Attract" is now washing windows on the bowery for crack
money. Good luck substantiating it, but I saw him with my own eyes. Make sure
you ask them!
>No, that`s not true. I`ve had it confirmed by members of the Paula fans
>list.
>
No offence, but I'd be slightly more cautious in having any story
confirmed by a fan or two.
Or maybe I'm being too cynical here.

Good luck not getting sued for libel.
Among those whom I like or admire, I can find no common denominator, but
among those whom I love, I can; all of them make me laugh.

<<Oh,
now I get it. Most amusing. (Did you detect the sarcasm in that ?)>>
Oh, heck no! We ain't too familiar with that dry British wit 'round these here
parts.

Uh...no.
It wasn't sarcasm at all!
The name, "Paula Abdul," is a joke name.
It was made up. Pretty obvious to
for anyone with half a brain.
No need for sarcasm, but a tiny
bit of cynicism might do it 4 ya.

I think not. I can think of a few ludicrous stories that fans of
various artists are only too willing to believe/confirm about their
heroes.

I didn't write any of the above.
So....go ahead and sue me!!!!
(And why on earth anyone would want
to do a bio of P.A. boggles the mind
in the first place)
So what *is* her real name? Didn't she attend HS in the LA area? I seem
to recall seeing a yearbook photo of her on some "before they were
famous" kinda show.
Linda ASGTPR#49
Well, she was real big back
in the eighties. She had F.Y.G.
doing the top of the charts and
the whole Jacksons tie in with the
choreography. But that was a real
long time ago. The choreography
was likely her real talent, not music.
Like I say, it was all manufactured.
Eventually a back-up singer tried
to sue her since she (the back-up)
had doubled the lead vocal on
a big track to make it sound decent.
Then she married Emilio Estevez
and then she went through a bulimia
phase. Then she married another guy
and tried to market a clothing line.
If you want to do a book on a pop
star, and have people buy it, the best
idea is to do it while the star is hot.
Either that or write about someone
who was established as a creative
force as opposed to a top forty
phenomenon. Abdul just hasn't
got the staying power of say, a
Tina Turner. (Not that Tina's any
less manufactured these days, but she
has the history and respect of enough
folks to sell a book to)
I have no clue what her real name is.
When someone is as packaged as
Abdul was it's almost impossible
to find out. She was a Laker
chearleader, that's all...
a, "Laker girl."
The Lakers were a pretty hot team
in those days, and...whatever her
name was, she was spotted and given
the songs and the name. This is
going many, many, years back.
It was kind of a challenge I think
to take a chearleader and make them
a star since most chearleaders at the
pro sports level are basically looking
for showbiz gigs and starting out
way at the bottom, obviously.
As for yearbook photos....well...
Madonna has one you've seen
too, right?
Again, puh-lease don't ask me
to substantiate anything.

No, I don't believe she is
Arab-American, though a
lot of people do. Kasey Kasem
is Arab-American and did a
whole story on folks of that
heritage for Parade mag that
heavily featured "Paula" so he
thinks she is....but I believe
she ain't.
<Paula isn`t Arab/American, she`s American/French/Bazilian/Syrian>>
Hey, we claim Syrians....we aren't picky <g>
No hate mail please....my great-granda was Syrian.....

Paula graduated from a HS in North Hollywood before entering Cal State
Northridge in 1981. Any Valley gals or guys out there who would have
gone to school with her and can give us her *real* name and settle this?

Wrong. It came out in 1989, giving her eight years to do all of the
above.

What's interesting is your lack of hard information and hostility toward
Abdul. What's your problem and why are you so anxious to spread
incorrect information about her?
BTW, you never *did* say what you think is her real name.
Linda ASGTPR#49
FYG was released in 1989 - which gives her plenty of time to attend
college and establish a career as a choreographer before making her
first album.
Linda ASGTPR#49
Doubt it...
And if she actually entered college
in '81 that doesn't give her much
time to establish a carear as
#1: A Laker Girl
#2: A professional choreographer
#3: A chart topping pop singer
all before Forever Yer Girl came
out in the very early eighties.
>(Hey English Guy! What year was
>>Why?
Because I think the chances of finding
anyone who went to school with
Abdul are pretty slim at all much less
finding someone in this ng who did.
> #3: A chart topping pop singer

>>Wrong. It came out in 1989, giving her >>eight years to do all of the

Well, I did ask the English guy what year
it came out, didn't I, so obviously
I wasn't sure. Still seems like the early
eighties to me though. Seems to me it
was out at the same time as Thriller and
Control and all Madonna's early stuff.
That was all late eighties?
>>What's interesting is your lack of hard >>information and hostility toward
>>Abdul. What's your problem and
>>why are you so anxious to spread
>>incorrect information about her?
You're welcome to think it's mis-
information if you want to.
I don't now what you mean
by, "Hard information," though.
I say it's true but un-substantiable
by my resources. I was up-front
about that from the beginning and
still am.
>>BTW, you never *did* say what
>>you think is her real name.
I did immediately respond that I
have no idea what her real name
is. I think she's a nice Jewish girl
from L.A. and all of English guy's
stuff about her being, "American,
Brazilian, Syrian etc." or whatever
he said she is would be a lot of hoowie.
The mixed blood thing is probably
to cover the fact that she has no
Arab blood whatsoever.
Just hardcore showbiz hype really, not
hostility from me particulary.
Abdul's an eighties thing by me
anyhow, whether early or late eighties
and unlike our english friend I don't
see a comeback on the horizon.
Why believe the hype when the
career is over?
It must have been the crack.
--M.
Never said anything of the sort.
I'd say that yes, I can, or you can,
or anyone can claim what they wish
and yes, anyone that wishes to can
challenge. And you don't have to
have solid proof (like an Abdul
childhood pal) to challenge any claim
I make any more than I need "Hard
information" to make a claim IMO.

My dear....do believe that *all* the
decades run together in my
particular memory.
No shame in that!
Ya see, Linda?
Anyone can claim anything.
Doesn't make it true, doesn't make
it false.
No offense, but do you think she'd *honestly* admit to the public that her
ex-husband beat her??
It ain't no sin to crack a few laws now and then - as long as you don't break
any -- Mae West.
Well on her divorce papers, her signature is written as "P. Julie Beckerman" I
did here her middle name is Julie??
Ian
>Well on her divorce papers,
>her signature is written as "P. Julie >Beckerman" I did here her middle

Well....this doesn't prove definitively
that her maiden name isn't Abdul
but it's a start. And she may have had
her name changed legally to Abdul
long ago, too. But that's an interesting
bit of info all right. Obviously she didn't
choose to use the name, "Abdul" as
a married name or as a hyphenated
thing either.
Yeah -- and what did they do with the foot and a half of nose they lopped off
her before she became famous. She had quite a honker in some of those early
tapes....

I attended CSUN 1979-84, when Paula was there. Having some friends in
common, we spoke occasionally and went to some of the same parties. (sorry,
nothing juicy to report) I knew her as Paula Abdul.
She had been a cheerleader for CSUN, then choreographer for the squad. I
wrote for the school paper and interviewed her for a story about cheerleader
tryouts. This thread got me curious do I dug out my old string book and
found the story. (Gawd, those old clips are embarrassing to read!) Anyway,
here's the Paula quote:
---------
Paula Abdul, a 1981-82 cheerleader, taught the routines for the try-outs
and was there to assist.
"When they totally forget the routine, I'm here to help them remember,"
she said.
--------
She was kinda pudgy back then. But she definitely could move. I remember
being surprised at how someone with her body type could move with such
precision and kick so high. In fact, a photo with the story shows a
chubby-cheeked Paula leading a group in practice. Her kicked-up foot reaches
above her head.
Someone else mentioned cosmetic surgery. I don't think she's had any work on
her face. But she's definitely lost weight since her college days...and
perhaps had some body parts liposuctioned.
That's my Paula story. Back to lurking...

Thanks for that celeb anecdote. Too bad I didn't make a *bet* that
someone on this NG would have gone to school with Paula!

no im pretty sure shes had a nose job, i saw her on one of those "before they
were stars" and they showed old photos and clips of her from a movie and the
photos definitely had a different (larger) nose on them.
hell of a good dancer. as a singer...ugh.
