It claims that Cloris Leachman is the mother of both Annette O'Toole and
Robert Krueger (Freddie from Nightmare on Elm Street).
Is this correct? I've never heard this before.
Cheers, Fiona
Well for starters, Freddie Krueger is/was played by Robert Englund.
Her IMDb bio says:
Spouse
'George Englund' (1953 - 1979) (divorced); 4 sons
However, Englund's says:
Father designed U-2 spy plane
Went to UCLA(for three years) and Rodchester, Michigan.
Played all of Shakepeares clowns at age 25.
Parents names are Kent and Janis McDonald
As for O'Toole, she was born in Houston in 52. Doesn't seem likely.

One of Leachman's sons is Morgan Englund, who played Dylan Lewis on
Guiding Light for a few years in the early 90s.

Could just mean they were harassing him because he was playing his
boyfriend, or it could just mean there were enough gay men in the production
that he felt comfortable saying we, while not technically meaning each and
every member of the cast.
Or, it could mean they're all gay except Tim.

You're quite right. I stand corrected.
Cheers, Fiona
too scared to watch any of those Nightmare movies

Robert Englund is the one you are thinking of and no, he's not related
to Leachman. Not too sure about Annette O'Toole as I don't know much
about her.
Catty (a film bore)

If only. Morgan was the reason I started watching GL again and
stopped when he left the show. All the interviews/articles I've read
say thay he is married and has a daughter (I know this doesn't mean
much on ASG), but that could have changed in the last few years.
Thank you Wendy, for giving me hope.

I don't know about the others, but I do know for a fact that Leach-bitch
has a son named Morgan Englund (He played Dylan on Guiding Light for
quite a few years). If he is related to RObert Englund, he's WAY more
attractive... (Although I'm shocked that any spawn of Leachman's loins
cuold be anything more than horrifically ugly.)

Why? She was quite attractive when she was young. A runner-up Miss America,
if I recall correctly.
Leachman is not related to Robert Englunc (NOES). Her former husband,
George Englund is a showbiz peripheral who produced, wrote and directed
a television film that was badly produced, badly written and badly
directed called "Las Vegas Strip Wars" which starred Rock Hudson and
Sharon Stone (who was making one of her very early -- if not inaugural
billed credit -- apperances in the film). Stone married (I'm forgetting
now) either the line producer or the director of photography [most
likely since she looked pretty good] for a brief moment.
Leachman had to endure the truly horrible tragedy of a son (by Englund)
who comitted suicide.
Leachman trained at Northwestern with the legendary acting teacher,
Alvina Krause. I find your suggestion about the Moore show improbable
for several reasons, including:
1) From the beginning, Cloris had special billing, "Special Guest
Appearance" guaranteed in her deal, making her stand out as separate but
equal on that great ensemble. No one cast that show for fear that people
might outshine Moore. Ethel Wynant THE grande dame of TV casting, cast
the best actors in the parts; she was looking for a true ensemble.
2) She won the Oscar after, I believe, the first season for "Last
Picture Show" (a truly award-worth performance, IMO) and continued to
work on the sit-com afterwards, understanding that she was a character
actor and had a great role on the series.
3) As opposed to Vance, Leachman was very glamourous but detached. (Her
worldliness was point of contrast and humor in the ID of the Sue Ann
Niven's character as the improbable femme fatale in Lars' life) (I'll
never forget when she showed up at Mary's party in her Greek inspired
wrap to bring gloom because Rhoda was dating her brother, whom she was
subsquently relieved to find out was gay. 'Rhoda as fag hag' was
probably the most appropriately realistic character nuance in a show
full of well-crafted characters who, in lesser hands, ought to have been
complete cartoons)
4) The MTM people were so delighted with the success of Leachman (and
Harper) that they spun her out into her own terrible (with the exception
of the opening credits) sit-com.
5) She won several Emmys for her work on MTM.
Well she was 44 when the show started, and it had been 24 years since the
pageant. And certainly they wouldn't downplay her appearance in Phyllis or
subsequent roles. I don't think the atmosphere was like that on MTM.
She's very thin (in terrific shape) which tends not to age all that well.
They *did* worry that Valerie Harper was too pretty to play Rhoda, but when
she lost weight later they didn't put her padding, they celebrated it.
Now here's an interesting question. Obviously when creating a TV show one
has in mind certain physical characteristics for the characters. What would
be better -- to require an actor to play down their looks (Vance also had to
remain 20 pounds overweight) or to not hire them?
And yes, it does happen sometimes that they change the concept of the
character because of the strength of an actor who doesn't fit the type.
Beverly Hills Cop was conceived for Sylvestor Stallone. It obviously would
have been very different.

And what a nice message that was. Ellen said that no one says "Good for you,
you're gay," but 25 years earlier on television a woman could say "Thank
God" when she found out her brother was gay. Now of course that was an
over-reaction to her relief, but what got me was the final scene where
Phyllis asks Ben to play something for her
It showed that not only was Phyllis relieved because of Rhoda, but when she
calmed down from that euphoria it was still no big deal to her or Mary that
Ben was gay. Being 15, at the time it was a bit mind-blowing for me.
