Bill Campbell was interviewed this morning on Fox News Channel's "Fox and
Friends." The on-air chemistry between Campbell and "Once and Again"
co-star Sela Ward was cited as a factor in the success of the ABC series.
Campbell replied: "Everyone says we have good chemistry, and I say you
would have to be a fencepost *not* to have good chemistry with Sela Ward."

"Fox and Friends" is hosted by two guys and a woman* who, if they rang
your doorbell one evening would make you want to turn out the lights and
pretend you're not at home, but they're surprisingly palatable at 8 in the
morning. During Thanksgiving break, at least, I ended up watching "Fox and
Friends" out of all the morning shows (sorry to dash your dreams, Mr.
Gumbel), and it looks like that'll be the case during the Christmas/New
Year break. (*Steve Doocy, Brian Kilmeade and E.D. Donahey, according to
IMDb)

Well, one of the trio mentioned that Campbell is heir to the Champion
spark plug "fortune," and Bill noted that his Champion spark plug
inheritance at age 18 wasn't in the millions of dollars -- it wasn't even
$1 million. And he doesn't tune-up his Jeep on his own: "I'm absolutely
incompetent where mechanical things are concerned," according to Campbell.

Apparently Bill's outfit wasn't up to the standards of the Fox News
threesome. He was wearing khaki pants, a tan jacket, and a lime-striped
shirt over a T-shirt that was either dark green or bluish green. E.D. made
a remark to the effect that Bill must really have a lot of self-confidence
to come on TV wearing that outfit. "Bill, what's matching on you?"
Campbell appeared a little nonplussed by the attention to his fashion
statement, and I'll confess that I was, too. Maybe it's a bachelor thing
(IMDb entry for Campbell references him as a "die-hard bachelor"). Geez,
if I'd been in his bedroom this morning and he'd asked, "Does this shirt
go with these pants?" I'd have said, "Sure!"

"Fox and Friends" also had a feature on Columbia Pictures' new release
"Stuart Little." Wow--talk about giving everyone a plug except News Corp!

Maybe that's because Billy is only ONE of the heirs to the Champion
spark plug fortune.

He's used that line about Sela Ward before (it's come up in at least one or
two newpaper articles). He has a penchant for that type of expression. When
he was in "Moon Over Miami", he said of his then co-star Ally Walker: "You'd
have to be a piece of lox not to have chemistry with her."

Which led a friend and me to speculate on other variations on this theme he
might have used over the years, ala You'd have to be dryer lint... road
kill... dog slobber... toenail clippings...

Feel free to add on.

Speaking of that, I LOVE that TV show "Two Guys and a Girl." The new character,
Tommy, who plays the "girl's" boyfriend, is an extraordinarily humpy dreamboat.
Pete is a total babe, and Berg is cute-ish too.

Anyone have any info about him? Gay? Str8? Married? Hung?

I think he played "Jake Hanson"'s estranged psycho brother on Melrose Place.

BTW, Billy Campbell is pretty to look at, but he sounds too much like Bobby
Ewing.

Oh, dahling, they will grow on you. They did, on me. I tape it so I can skip
the news, (I just loathe civics), and interviews with athletes, and enjoy the
double entendre. They are so tres amusant! Once they did a show-long thing
with a faux nun, not revealing until the end that she was an actress. She had
Brian doing a "time-out" in the corner, and intimidated the others just like
the real nuns of the 50s. It was just terrificly funny!

"Die hard bachelor" sounds like another way of saying "gay".

Or perhaps just really soured on marriage by his parents' divorce when
he was two years old, and his mother's subsequent 2 or 3 additional
divorces.

Billy Campbell's had relationships with several actresses (including
Virginia Madsen and Jennifer Connelley <sp?>). I've corresponded in
another forum with someone who knows him (a costumer on "The
Rocketeer"), and there is nothing to suggest he's gay. See also "Out"
magazine interview with him and Paul Hopkins after "More Tales of the
City" at http://members.tripod.com/~Pocket_Rocket/celebrity/tales.txt.
Sounds pretty hetero.

At the end of September, Billy Masters had a BI about an actor who had
"rocketeered" to fame who was going to be in a new touted TV series. The BI
actor had questions about his playing the male heterosexual lead character. At
that time, the consensus was this BI was about Bill Campbell.

Oh, a BI -- I guess that puts everything to rest then. <g> I forgot I has in
a.s.g.

P.S. Any idea what the "questions" were? Possibly, "Am I old enough to play
opposite Sela Ward?" (That was actually her question, thinking Campbell too young
for the part...)

Testy, I know you said you don't believe BC is gay because one of your friends
said he wasn't. But, out of all the gossip columnists who write BIs today,
Billy Master's BIs are generally accepted as some of the more reliable. I am
not saying BM is infallible or that he couldn't ever be wrong. Rather, I am
saying BM's track record for thinly veiled & correct BIs is good.

If you read the original BI, BM doesn't say the actor is gay...just that rumors
surround him. The actor may indeed be straight or gay or whatever? I don't
know. However, I get the impression that BM believes the actor to be closeted.

Edwina

btw - here is the original BI I am talking about. Read it & make up your own
mind:

FILTHTOGO BLIND ITEM, 9/27/99

from http://www.filth2go.com

Could it be that the star of a highly touted new TV series is uncomfortable in
his role as a heterosexual romantic lead? Seems that way to me. While this
character is a departure from the fey roles that have rocketed him to stardom,
this oft-rumored-about leading man is willing to play the part. He is not,
however, willing to divulge too much. Whether he's simply being private, or
dodging the big question, is not completely clear. When faced with a panel of
fawning women on nationwide television asking if he's single, he stammered,
stuttered, and finally got out, "Technically single. I guess you could call it
that." When he was then asked if he'd like to be fixed up, he smiled and
demurred saying, "I'm not really in a being-fixed-up mode". He may not be out,
but those are answers I can at least respect.

Um, that wasn't what I wrote at all. I offered an alternative explanation to "die
hard bachelor" automatically meaning gay. I also cited someone who knows him (not
a "friend" of mine, but rather a friend of his) as providing no reason to believe
he's not interested in women, as well as an article in Out magazine acknowledging
him as straight.

> If you read the original BI, BM doesn't say the actor is gay...just that rumors

I thought it was obvious from my remarks that I hadn't read it -- that's why I
asked the questions I posed.

Thanks for providing the text. It does sound purely speculative to me. Campbell's
actions are not at all inconsistent with someone merely being guarded about his
private life. But of course, at a.s.g., privacy has a way of translating into
"must be gay." <g>

What ever became of that Louis guy on the Fox News Channel's morning show? He
was the only real reason to watch, although the others have grown on me
somewhat, like a wart.

Testy, I've known Billy since high school. I was at a party last night
with his mother, stepfather (marriage #4) sisters and brothers (but not
Billy - boo hoo). I think the speculations about his sexuality have
more to do with his pretty looks (which, by the way, are inherited from
his mother and are shared by his whole family) and his lack of visible
female companionship. When we were in high school he was a big beefy
guy with a full beard and long hair, and dressed like Paul Bunyan, and
nobody thought he was gay. He's a nice guy, kind of goofy, I think more
comfortable with other men than with women BUT I really don't think he's
gay.
