Yes, he was arrested last month on charges of stalking Melissa
Leo (who BTW is Kay on Homicide: Life on the Street) and their 9-year-old
son, and assaulting Leo's boyfriend. However, the judge threw out the
stalking charge and charged him only with "telephone harassment". He also
won the right to phone his son and send him mail. Leo has custody of
their son and although Heard sees him every other weekend, they
have been involved in a long-running and bitter custody battle.
Incidentally Leo and Heard were never married.
The assault charge is a separate charge that will go before a judge next
year. Heard's lawyer claims that the "beating up" was a shoving match that
ensued when Heard tried to speak to his son outside the boy's school in
the boyfriend's presence. The "peeping Tom" charges are the result of
Heard's standing outside his son's school with binoculars. Heard's lawyer
says that the "telephone harassment' was just a fight on the phone.
It's hard to know who to believe in this situation. Heard's behaviour seems
innocuous enough -- the actions of a worried father in an
emotionally-charged situation -- but apparently he did assault Leo twice
when they broke up (which is probably the incident that you are thinking
of).
Having been a bystander during similar events in my family, I can
understand that if you've been a victim of violence, the mere continued
presence of your abuser in your life can feel like harassment.
Ironically, I remember the first time I saw John Heard in a major role.
It was in "Chilly Scenes of Winter," and he was great! He played a guy
who became obsessed with an ex-lover. He then proceeded to harrass,
stalk, and do a peeping Tom on her. Once more, life imitates art.

erm...thanks for clearing that up...sort of. From the dim, dark recesses
of my brain I can dredge up a vague memory of William Hurt being involved
in some type of legal spat with an ex-wife(?)girlfriend(?) who accused him
of being abusive. And just to add to my confusion about similarly-named
actors, Cybersleaze recently had an item about John Hurt and his romantic
entanglements with various women -- I could swear John Hurt is an openly
gay British actor. Is there another actor named Heard or Hurt who is gay?
My head hurts just thinking about it...
Evelyn, thinking that a nice medicinal hot toddy would probably make my
head feel better
John Hurt is an English actor who played Quentin Crisp in "The Naked Civil
Servant" and another gay role in the movie "Partners."
He says he's straight, anyway. Definitely not openly gay.
