LOS ANGELES -- Actress Gail Fisher, who portrayed secretary Peggy
Fair to actor Mike Connors' detective Joe Mannix in the popular hour-long
TV crime show "Mannix" -- and who won a best supporting actress
Emmy for her role -- died Dec. 2 in Los Angeles.
The actress' brother, Clifton M. Fisher, 73, also died the same day.
Gail Fisher died at the Brockman Medical Center, Los Angeles, and her
brother, a retired insurance manger, died at Daniel Freeman Memorial
Hospital in Inglewood, a Los Angeles suburb.
Ms. Fisher, who in 1961 became the first black woman to speak dialogue
in a national television commercial, was born in Orange, N.J., in 1935.
In addition to her Emmy-winning role in "Mannix," which aired on CBS
from 1967 to 1975, she also appeared in the television series "Love
American Style," "The Doctors," and "My Three Sons."
On stage, her on- and off-Broadway appearances included “A Raisin In
The Sun” and “Simply Heaven.”
Fisher also won two Golden Globe Awards and wrote song lyrics for
artists such as Nancy Wilson and the late Julian Adderley.
Her brother, who also lived in Los Angeles, was a general manager for
Mutual of Omaha Insurance Co. and had worked for Mutual Life Insurance
Co. in New Jersey, Nebraska and California before retiring 14 years ago.
He was born in Norfolk, Va.
Fisher is survived by her daughters, Mrs. Samara Maxe and Mrs. Jole
Baerga; a brother, Herbert; a sister, Mrs. Ona Gaither, and five grandchildren.
Clifton Fisher is survived by his wife, Gloria; sons Craig and Kim; daughters
Mrs. Diane Beasley and Mrs. Jalilah A. Muhammad; a brother, Herbert;
a sister, Mrs. Ona Gaither; 16 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
