Fannie Flagg also had a regular role on a Dick Van Dyke (no pun
intended) show that followed his first successful 60's series.

I'm reading Rita Mae Brown's "Memoir of a Literary Rabble Rouser". She writes
about her relationship with Fannie Flagg, mentioning that when she first met
Fannie (mid-70s), Fannie was living with a woman who had left a long-running
TV program to take a role in a film. The woman is described as being blue
eyed, almost white-blonde, possessing a great figure, heart-shaped face,
looks, talent, etc.. Lacking the ability to kiss ass and approaching 40, her
career was ending. Now she's back on television.

Any idea of who this woman is? The pseudonym is Kate O'Reilly - possibly Susan
Sullivan?

If I should take this question elsewhere, please let me know. Thanks.

No, this is exactly the place for this sort of question. In fact, if you
were to take it anywhere else, I would have no choice but to have you
taken into custody by the Usenet authorities.

Now. I don't have an answer to your question, just a question I hope you
can answer: Was Fannie Flagg not herself a minor television
actress/comedienne (as they would have put it in those days) back in the
sixties and perhaps the seventies? Every time I see that name, I'm
convinced I've seen it on some sitcom or other.

Lovely name, by the way.(Chloe, not Fannie.) Second runner-up in the
long-running baby*-naming competition round here.

*Purely hypothetical at this point.

There is either a county or a town in Alabama named Fannie
Flagg. In one of her earlier interviews she claimed the
town in question was named after her grandmother. Later
on she found out that it was named for a prize winning
cow. <G>

Excellent guess! If memory serves, Mr. Flannery was on "Days of Our
Lives" (long-running TV program), and she appeared in "The Towering
Inferno" (role in a film). She's currently on "Bold and the
Beautiful." The description fits, and I can see how one might confuse
the two Susans.

I'm relieved - been a long-time lurker and I know I can always count on at
least a dozen laughs everytime I come here.

Rita Mae mentions that a stint on Hollywood Squares was paying Fannie's bills
during their relationship, and then she commenced with her book-writing career
- first book was Coming Attractions. Don't know about any sitcoms; RM sez she
was perfect for a sitcom, but a perfect sitcom never found her. Caught just
a glimpse of her in the movie made from her "Fried Green Tomatoes at the
Whistle Stop Cafe".

Flagg sounds like a helluva woman. Rita Mae once bet her $500 that she
wouldn't drive from the CBS studios in Hollywood to the Beverly Wilshire sans
shirt & bra. She promptly doffed her duds, and (in an AMC Pacer yet) drove
the distance without notice.

Fannie was WAY ahead of her time in comedy; I recall fondly her "Susie
Sweetwater Wedding", as reported in the local paper, "The groom attended
Numerical Grammar School. The reception will be held at the Trailerways Bus
Station, where the bride's mother is a part-time Ladies Room attendant."
Cousin Carole runs a newspaper in the Deep South where nuptials are
described in such language.

She also appeared on Fernwood Tonight as a woman who was violated by a
visitor from Deep Space. "He just SHINED his LIGHT in my private parts!"

She was on the fast-track in the late 60's; something happened, personal or
professional, to divert her to Fried Green Tomato(e)s. A classy, funny
woman.

I believe Fannie Flagg appeared as a regular on "The New Dick Van Dyke
Show." It was set in, I believe, Phoenix AZ. Fannie Flagg played Dick's
secretary or something.

So, no "Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman," and no "Hee Haw." But also not nearly
enough recent exposure, dammit.

The *second* thing I think about her is "Fried Green Tomatoes".

The *first* thing is "co host of Candid Camera".. I'm pretty sure all I ever
saw was reruns of the show (in the mid 70s)

I recall her telling about how (back when she was still Patricia Neal)
she was Miss Alabama in the Miss America pageant. She took off her
glasses for the swimsuit competition and fell off the end of the runway.
She changed her name when she went into showbiz because there was
already an actress named Patricia Neal.

This is what I knew her from -- when Fried Green whatever

Now what was the name of Jack Klugman's ex, the one who
always answered Ba-Zoooms! to every question? Brett Somers?

She also starred on Broadway in "Best Little Whorehouse in Texas" and did a

doing a pitch for highway beautification (boy, talk about trivia!).

You're all missing it. She wrote Fried Green, she's
probably a dyke, but she's an artist and a good one,
so lay off.
