AS regular readers will know, we at 3am are not fans of actor Max Beesley - but
he doesn't deserve to be beaten up.
Max, the boyfriend of former Spice Girl Mel B, was the victim of an unprovoked
late-night attack in his home town Manchester.
The Tom Jones actor was hit on the back of the head by an unknown thug as he
and Mel walked back to their hotel after a night out on the town.
Mel screamed as her lover of two years was knocked to the ground. She rushed to
Max's defence and the man ran off.
A keen amateur boxer who trains regularly at a gym in London's Notting Hill,
Max's first reaction was to give chase. But he later told friends that in
Manchester it would have been unwise to fight back.
One friend said: "Max grew up in Manchester and knows the rules. It's not that
he's a coward - far from it. He can look after himself.
"But with lunatics who hit you from behind at 2am for no reason, you've got to
be careful. The man could have had a knife or even a gun.
"Sure, Max had a nasty bruise. But it's better than being dead." Max is
mystified as to what triggered the attack. But he said: "The bloke probably
recognised me and Mel and thought he'd have a go.
"It happens all the time. There's always some jerk in the pub who wants to beat
the famous bloke up.
"I can usually talk my way out of it, calm people down, buy them a drink, and
all that sort of thing.
"But this time I didn't get the chance. One minute I'm walking - the next
someone smashes my head. Then he's gone. What could I do?"
Max decided against calling the police, realising they had no description to go
on and the chances of an arrest would be slim.
A check-up revealed no serious damage. Certainly not enough to completely spoil
Max's seasonal celebrations.
We are told that Mel's New Year party at the Compleat Angler restaurant near
her home in Marlow, Bucks, was a rip-roaring success.
So no hard feelings, Max. And a happy New Year to you and Mel.
"Rules, for a street fight?" I say in amazement, paraphrasing the late
Ted "The Original Lurch" Cassidy's great line from "Butch Cassidy and the
Sundance Kid."
