HEADLINE: FORMER BAY CITY ROLLER ON UNDERAGE GAY SEX CHARGES
BYLINE: Jim Wilson
BODY:
A FORMER member of the Bay City Rollers appeared in court
yesterday accused of homosexual offences involving an
underage youth.
Derek Longmuir, who played drums with the successful
Scottish band
before pursuing a nursing career, faced three indecency
charges involving a
youth under 18, the homosexual age of consent.
Longmuir, 47, made no plea or declaration when he appeared
in
private at Edinburgh Sheriff Court and was released on bail
after the hearing
before Sheriff John Horsburgh, QC.
He was one of the original members of the Bay City Rollers,
along
with his older brother, Alan, the band's bass guitarist.
They enjoyed
international success in the 1970s and were famous for their
tartan outfits and
screaming fans.
The case was continued for further inquiry yesterday after
Longmuir,
of Queens Park Court, Edinburgh, appeared on petition and
was accused of
three charges of alleged indecent conduct under Section 13
of the Criminal Law
(Consolidation) (Scotland) Act 1995.
The charges relate to offences allegedly committed since
December
1997.
In recent years, Longmuir, who qualified as a nurse five
years ago
and now works at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, had refused to
take part in a
reunion of the Rollers featuring his brother, who has
suffered a number of heart
attacks, and two other former members, Eric Faulkner and
Stuart "Woody" Wood.
The singer Les McKeown, who has not spoken to his former
colleagues since the band split in acrimony in 1978, also
declined to join the new
line-up after failing to claim the BCR name for his own
group.
Sell-out tours and a series of hit singles including Bye Bye
Baby,
Shang-a -Lang, and Summer Love Sensation fuelled Rollermania
in Britain, the
United States and Japan during the 1970s.
Six of the band's former members are now mired in a
long-running
legal wrangle with Arista Records over profits held by the
company.
snip!
No THAT's gossip.
thanks.

Geez, I guess that they CAN get arrested...
not in this town...
(I'm basing this on the British age of consent being 18 and the Canadian age
being 14. I'm assuming for the moment that the youth is over 14. It will be
rather a sticky situation if he's over 16 though. That's the age of
heterosexual consent in the UK, while homosexual consent is 18. The House of
Lords recently overturned the government's efforts to equalize them.)

I wondered why the article specified "the homosexual age of
consent".
Now, to keep in sync with the policies (David!) - from a
non-media source:
"Derek had 2 of the charges dropped. He alleges he has been
set up.
He, his brother and one of the original arresting officers
are all
completely convinced about the set up. Dereks computer was,
and still is confiscated, and that is an indication of the
remaining standing charge.
He is ok, back home, very embarrassed, was treated very well
at the
police station, he has been suspended from work with full
pay until
the courts conclusion but according to sources who spoke a
couple
of times today he feels so shown up by all of this, that he
is
talking of leaving the country and just going hiding
somewhere for a
while. The family is trying to keep everything very low key
."
Hey - I know as far as gossip goes, it's weak, but I'm stuck
here in Indiana. Even the Planet Hollywood opening didn't
have any celebs here. (Unless you count Tom Arnold...) I
did hear that Bobby Bowden refused to shake Rush Limbaugh's
hand at a car race though - does that count?

Actually, having toured right behind them on the circuit, it seemed
like they lasted a lot longer than anyone expected they would.
The hype lasted about three months, the career about three years.
Just found a CD on sale at Virgin Records with the Rollers hits...and
one of the Rollers on the cover was a woman (or was it our friend here
in a dress??? No, there was lots of cleavage shown. Wondered about
this cover - since don't remember any girl in the group).

There was no girl in the group. Just because you're on the cover
doesn't mean you're on the record ;-)
Case in point - Twiggy on the cover of Bowie's "Pin Ups".

I don't know much about British law. Perhaps they wanted to make it clear
that the youth was over the heterosexual age of consent but are not allowed
to reveal his age.

True.
And we were being facetious, mate.

Sorry mate, I forgot to turn on my irony glands this morning.

That cd is a collection of semi-recent (early 90s) rerecordings of some of
the band's hits by the early 90s line up of the band. The woman on the cover
is/was the girlfriend of the guitarist (who owns the name) and she sings back
up on some of the songs and tours (or toured with them). I listened to some
of it at a used cd store and it is pretty bad.

This is so similar to the arrest several months ago of Gary Glitter
(underage accuser, computer confiscated, 70's star, etc...). But
something doesn't seem right about this case...methinks there is a setup
here. BTW, has the GG case ever made it to the courts over in the UK?
What was the verdict?
Maryanne.
Nothing seems to have happened yet. And, surprisingly, I've read/heard
nothing in the media about the Bay City Roller... but I'm still making
my way through the Sunday papers.

He just entered a plea of not guilty. It will be a while before the
trial.

GG's case has been postponed to November or thereabouts. He plead not
guilty to 51 charges of having pornographic photos of kids and other
(3?) charges including (I think) being involved with an underaged
girl.

I'm hoping I'll be able to forget 1998.

I'm not sure if the case has come up yet. But there wasn't, IIRC, an
underage accuser. Glitter took his PC in for repair and the store staff
found images on his hard drive which they reported to the police.

I heard that the store itself is in trouble for stealing information
off hard drives like credit card numbers.
I guess we were right when were calling them the "Gay Shitty Rollers" back in
the 70's! ;-)
