From Entertainment Weekly 9 years ago-
Merv Griffin trying to promote Ryan Seacrest to the magazine:
""Ryan will be a giant. He works off no script, he has enormous energy, he's
bright and glib and runs the show like he invented it. The kids love him,
and he has lots of sex appeal." That's Merv Griffin talking about
22-year-old L.A. deejay Seacrest, who hosts Griffin's new Click gamer, as
well as a CNET forefront-of-technology show. Is Griffin a good judge of
who'll catch on with the public? Can you spell V-A-N-N-A W-H-I-T-E?"
<snip>
What was the gossip? That Ryan was an occasional schnitzel smuggler for
Merv? What I don't understand is why Ryan has to hide in the closet (if he's
gay). He's not a lead singer for a rock and roll band. He's not an actor.
He's a television show host living and working in the gayest city in the
world. If he can't come out there, where can he come out? I don't really
think people would quit watching E! or American Idol if he announced he was
gay.

Icebreaker
"Keep it down, Poorlando! I'm trying to eavesdrop on Melissa's party plans."
"Why would you want to go to her party and not mine?"
"Because she's rich."
=============
he became rich by being affable to a fault
and gettin lucky with two game shows
Maybe he just figures that his sexual orientation is a private matter.
It has always been private for Griffin as well although he neither
conformed OR denied it. He just didn't discuss it. He wasn't in the
close but neither was he out, loud and proud.
He gave a weird interview in I think Details magazine. He said he had a
girlfriend but had to dump her because he always thought she was stealing
from him if he left her alone in a room. Huh? Btw, I don't think he can
come out of the closet any time soon. Hollywood may have a lot of gay
people (as does Washington, D.C.), but they would be the last people to push
any agenda. They are more likely to side with the people who want to limit
gay rights than those who don't. It is still the kiss of death in many
instances to be out and work in front of the camera.
Puzz
Unfortunate since Merv is one of the people who could be out, loud, and
proud without losing anything.
There's a huge feature article about him in the latest Rolling Stone.
Interesting life.
> [Griffin] became rich by being affable to a fault

...that explains his television career. Now anyone wanna explain those
pop records he cut in the '50s thru '70s?...

He likely could as well as being a role model for younger gay men.
He's just a very private person who chooses to make his sexual
orientation a NON-issue. At least he doesn't deny it vocally like some
do.
