Someone in another group was inquiring whether Andy Gibb's suicide came
just after he was dumped/snubbed by Jane Seymour or Victoria Principal
(I'm going on memory - don't quote me). Now, I have always been under
the vague impression that Mr Gibb was not of the female-seeking
persuasion....

Was Andy Gibb straight? And has this "story" ever been heard before? I'm
kinda confuselled again.

It was Victoria Principal. Hardly worht killing yourself over, if you
ask me.

Pretty sure he was straight. Never heard rumours to the contrary.

I seem to remember his heart attack having more to do with his severe
cocaine problem than his depression though an argument can be made for
his dependency being a symptom of his depression....

Self-induced! How do you induce a heart attack in yourself: by eating
fourteen pounds of bacon in one sitting?

No, Mr. Gibb had a ferocious drug addiction, and evidently he blew a
valve or two after a serious cocaine binge. If you want to call that
suicide, or a self-inflicted heart attack, then go right ahead. It's
stretching the definition of either term, though.

As I recall from reports at the time, Gibb had serious drug problems, which
could explain both the depression and the heart attack.

I don't recall what show it was on, but I saw Victoria Principal
interviewed and she said that while she loved him, he had a MAJOR
coke problem and she couldn't tolerate it. I was always under the
impression that his heart attack was related to the cocaine use,
although I suppose it could have been coincidence.

There were also persistent stories about his serious crush on Marie
Osmond, which came before the Victoria affair. Supposedly he didn't
understand what his religion had to do with it... he was interested in a
serious romance but Marie's family were not thrilled about it. I believe
Andy was a flaming heterosexual.

In addition to a coke problem, Andy had a congenital heart defect.

Andy Gibb died in 1988, very close to his 30th birthday. He died of a
congenital heart condition, which, of course, wasn't helped by cocaine use.

The years after the release of "After Dark" were filled with sporadic
stints on TV (Solid Gold, Punky Brewster), Broadway shows
(Pirates of Penzance) and questionable romances (Victoria Principal). These
years were musically very unproductive (2 new songs on Andy Gibb's Greatest
Hits). Ironically, he had turned things around enough to start working
on a new album, and was to tour with the Bee Gees on their 1989 tour.
His brothers completed the work on one single and released it as part of the
"Andy Gibb" compilation album that came out in the early 90's.

I seem to remember his heart was enlarged from his drug use, and that
lead to the heart attack.

My Andy Gibb story occured years ago here in Toronto when he was in one
of those Pirates of Penzance that were so popular in the early 80's.
A freind and I were over on the Island one week day, and ended up at a
nearly deserted patio patio bar on Centre Island by the ferry.
The only aother people there was a small group which included Mr. Gibb.
At one point, I went to the washroom and while I was at the urinal, who
should enter and walk up to the next urinal but Andy himself. He stood
about a foot back from the urinal and displayed a rather impressive
piece of meat. I was young at the time (although out) and it went no
further than a wave good-bye when he left the bar.

Last I heard Andrew Stevens and Kate Jackson are still together.
Well, at least together as far as two people who prefer to date those
of their own gender can be.

Regarding Andys who are dead, would you be thinking of Andy Gibb? (also
a reputed FOD) - but I think he died playing solo-russian roulette. Then
there's Andy Kaufman, but he choked to death on his own misogyny.

As for Victoria Principal, she's busy not letting any old photos out
of her - comparing her new publicity stills to the ones she won't
allow released suggests that she doesn't want folks to notice the
discernable
differences between the two. And those ain't the ravages of age.

Andy and Kate lasted barely a year, back in the late 70s. I recall talking to

Andrew Stevens (son of Stella) is alive. Andy Gibb died of a heart
attack. Andy Kaufman may not even be dead (I'm still not convinced):
and he wasn't a misogynist. He punched everybody's buttons.

Not to mention a few faces, though all for the sake of Art. While he was
undeniably a comic, his pro wrestling stint was far more performance art
than it was comedy. He didn't want people to just laugh at him; he wanted
them to feel distinctly uncomfortable while they laughed, or wander if they
really should be laughing. Performance art at its best.

It would be the ultimate Elvis prank, too. :-) Check it out -- no one
agrees on what he died of -- no one. It's lung cancer, leukemia,
brain cancer, etc, depending upon whom you ask. The more they protest
(and they doth protest a lot - to the point of doing one of those
"Elvis is Really, Really Dead" specials for Andy), the more I'm
certain it's a prank.

Well, his whole life was street theatre. That may verge on
misanthropy at times.

He did that at the very beginning, in his comedy act. Anyone who saw
(as I was fortunate to see) his early Latka-does-bad-impressions
routine, can verify that. The point was to make the audience laugh
*at* somebody, then deal with the ramifications, then finally let them
off the hook when he went into the Elvis bit. Brilliant stuff.

The guy waited tables at a diner, while he was working on Taxi, just
to see people interacting with each other on a basic level. He was
very devoted, at a deep level, to his work...whatever it was. :-)

Yes, Elaine, I know that.

What I'm saying is, there are so many different ailments to which he

In another attempt to set the record straight ONCE AND FOR ALL, here is an
excerpt from The Andy Kaufman Home Page - "Andy's Final Days":

Thanksgiving, 1983 -- Holiday dinner at the Kaufman home in Long
Island was no different than any other celebration, except for one
thing...Andy's nagging cough caused everyone to express concern about
his health. He assured family and friends that everything was fine. A
doctor checked it out and nothing had shown up.

A month later the coughing continued and was much worse. Something was
obviously wrong, so Andy returned for a full battery of medical tests.
When the final results were available, the doctors were stunned. Andy
Kaufman had lung cancer and it was already in advanced stages.
Diagnosed with a rare large-cell carcinoma, Andy's ailment was
inoperable and incurable. The doctors expected him to live less than
three months...

Bill Hicks was fantastic stand-up comedian. Very astute in his
observations, railed against hypocrisy (sp?) in all it's form, and was
really fucking funny.

One of my favorite bits was when he said the best way to keep smoking,
was to only smoke packs with warnings that didn't bother you. (i.e., he
said it's okay for him to smoke a pack that says smoking causes low
birth weight, 'cause he wasn't having no kids.)

Ironic that he died of lung cancer.

But he is sorely missed.

Director Milos Forman (One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest, Amadeus, Hair
and The People versus Larry Flynt) wants to make Andy Kaufman the
subject of his next project with screenwriters Larry Karaszewski and
Scott Alexander (Ed Wood) providing the script. According to Variety,
the trio is finalizing a deal to make a biopic about the "Dada of Ha-Ha"
with Universal Pictures and Jersey Films, whose founder, Danny DeVito,
co-starred with Kaufman on the sitcom Taxi. DeVito also acted in
Forman's 1975 film One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, and may appear in
the project. Oscar-winner Nicolas Cage (Leaving Las Vegas) is said to be
the likely choice to play Andy.

Okay, okay, I'm in the game now. I always forget his name for some
reason (beyond my inherent brain-numb state) -- he's the guy Dennis
Leary ripped off. Unfortunately, I remember Leary's, but for the same
reason I recalled Robin Williams' name before he "got famous"...mainly
because all my friends in stand-up bitched about him.

I once saw Bill Hicks at the Punch Line in Walnut Creek Ca, He started
picking on this couple in the front row and almost everyone left and boo-ed
him. Really 170 or so people left and demanded their money back. Bill was
soooo F**Kin funny that night they let the 10 of us left stay for the 2nd
show Bill was even funnier.
