SHE'S a woman of many talents, but even Kylie Minogue can't win them all.
The pop princess had been widely touted to play the lead in Baz Luhrmann's
latest musical extravaganza, a big-budget remake of Puccini's opera, La Boheme.
But we have some bad news for the Aussie singer - it seems Baz isn't as
enamoured with the diva from Down Under as everyone else.
In fact, the director - who persuaded her to take a cameo role in Moulin Rouge
as the Absinthe Fairy - has told pals that Kylie's voice is just not good
enough for a part in his new multi-million pound flick.
Baz's spokeswoman, Maria Farmer, told 3am: "From the moment Baz perceived the
notion of the Absinthe Fairy, he thought there'd be no better person for the
role than Kylie Minogue.
"But there's no way she'll be appearing in his new film. Her voice simply isn't
up to it. La Boheme is Puccini's classic operatic score, sung in Italian. Baz
has spent most of the last two years searching the globe and he's auditioned
2,000 opera singers.
"And let's face it, Kylie's no opera singer."
It will be disappointing news to the 34-year-old popster, who's said to be keen
to swap the recording studio for a film set.
She was particularly eager to take the role of tragic heroine Mimi, who kills
herself after learning she's pregnant by her married soldier lover.
But while Kylie's on-screen talents may be up to Aussie soaps - she first found
fame in the late 80s as Charlene in Neighbours alongside Jason Donovan -
unfortunately landing a lead role in Baz's movie just ain't going to happen.
Kylie has appeared in a number of films. She famously co-starred with
Jean-Claude Van Damme in Street Fighter which turned out to be a massive flop.
She had more luck with soppy flick The Delinquents and comedy Bio-Dome, but we
assume Hayride To Hell was also floptastic - has anyone ever heard of it?
Talking recently about Street Fighter, Kylie said: "It seemed like a good idea
at the time. Don't ask me why. Now it just makes me cringe when I think about
it."
Never mind, Kylie. At least you've got a nice bum.
This is a major plot change from LA BOHEME the opera; either this gossip piece
is clueless about Puccini or else Luhrman is going to do his film version very
differently from the stage version he did about 10 years ago.
It sounds like he mashed together "Boheme" and "Madame Butterfly"
and, who the hells knows? maybe "Suor Angelica" and whatever other Puccini
operas he happens to have heard.
Surely the gossip is wrong; if Mimi kills herself, then it isn't
"Boheme", and even Luhrmann isn't that brazen.

Huh? Rudolfo wasn't married or a soldier, nor did Mimi commit
suicide...she was *ill*!
I guess Baz didn't want to be accused of remaking "Rent," so he
tinkered with the plot to make it a different tale.
WTF?

Good for Baz. Minogue sounds like tweety bird, thin soprano, nasal, and no
lower register. She needs voice classes badly. She's a Minnie Mouse
sound alike.
