NY POST

NO, LOVE HEWITT
CAN'T BE 'CHARMED'

By MICHAEL STARR
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
------

JENNIFER Love Hewitt has said "no thanks" to replacing Shannen Doherty on
"Charmed."

Sources say producers of the WB's sisters-as-witches series approached the
ex-"Party of Five"/"Time of Your Life" star to replace Doherty, who left the
Aaron Spelling show earlier this month - supposedly because of a rocky
relationship with co-star Alyssa Milano (Holly Marie Combs also stars in the
series).

There's no word on why Hewitt would pass up the opportunity to headline an
established show, although she has been pursuing a big-screen career and
perhaps felt that "Charmed" fell into the "been there, done that" category.

Earlier this year, Hewitt starred opposite Sigourney Weaver in "Breakers" and
she's also starring with Alec Baldwin in the upcoming "The Devil and Daniel
Webster."

Hewitt also headlined ABC's "Audrey Hepburn" miniseries last year and has a
lucrative hair-care endorsement deal.

Notwithstanding finding Doherty's replacement, there could be additional
trouble on the "Charmed" set.

Combs has reportedly asked for and received a big per-episode raise - and will
now be making more than Milano, the show's erstwhile star.

More trouble is the last thing the WB needs after losing "Buffy the Vampire
Slayer" to rival UPN, which is also adding a new "Star Trek" series starring
Scott Bakula.

Didn't we JUST get another report saying that Milano was still the
highest paid on the show?

Yes. I read 60K for Combs and 80K for Milano.

Ok so JLH turned it down. With her movie career kicking up it might end up
being a good idea. Who do you think should fill in? I'd LOVE to see Mia Sara,
she's great and hasn't seen her full potential yet, she'd be a good fill in and
I don't think she'd cost much. Otherwise I cant think of somebody good who
could actually consider taking the role.

The rumor is that Spelling Productions is "negotiating" (READ: haggling over
$$$) with that fine dramatic actress, Miss Tiffani-Amber Thiessen, who has
reportedly dropped the hyphen and Amber parts of her name. IMO, other
suggestions would be:
1. Jamie Luner (ex-Rachel, Profiler), but she would have to dye her hair to
match HMC and Alyssa Milano. Might be too old to play a younger long-lost
sister, if TPTB are going with the long-lost half-sister idea.
2. Irene Molloy (ex-Hunter, Grosse Pointe). She has the whole "bitchy 'tude"
thing down, and, on Grosse Pointe, her parody (allegedly) of Shannen Doherty
was quite amusing. She also resembles HMC and AM.
3. Sarah Brown (ex Carly, GH). She is trained in martial arts, but could she do
at least some of her own stunts (HMC and AM do a lot of their own stunts). Also
would have to dye her hair to match.
4. Kimberly McCullough (ex Robin, GH) Robin's mother Anna was played by Finola
Hughes, who plays the (ghost of the) dead mother on Charmed. Bears a
resemblance to HMC, would be about the right age for the (assumed) long-lost
half-sister angle
5. Sarah Gilbert (ex Darlene, Roseanne) She could do a bang up job bringing
comic relief to Charmed, but......I could see her playing the part like a
deranged serial killer, so maybe not.
6. Fairuza Balk -- IMO she's underrated, she's a practicing witch in real life,
and she could bring some range to the new character.
7. Claire Kramer (ex-Glory, Buffy the Vampire Slayer) OHMIGAWD!!!!! Her turn as
Glory on BtVS was quite intense. If she can do "bitchy" as well as she did, she
can soften it up to do nice. Dye-job needed.
8. Eliza Dushku (ex-Faith, BtVS)--Don't I wish. She could do the "troubled
long-lost sister gets redeemed" thing, but with her movie roles increasing in
frequency, I soubt that she will even have time for guest roles on BtVS, let
alone a weekly series.
And finally.......
9.Miss Tori Spelling (ex-Donna, 9021vomit). Another fine dramatic actress in
her own right, she has the boobs, the hair stylist, and the nepotism to make
this role her own. I smell kudos and lauds in this chick's future, if she gets
the part. (However, if there is a god, she won't even get a guest shot.)
Anyway, just my picks. I doubt that any of these will get the part, but I do
have a $10.00 bet that The Writers are going with the "long-lost half sister,
born of the illicit union between Mom and her White Lighter" angle.
Just my aimless thoughts for the day......

Might? This is a cutesy little show but it's on the WB and in
the middle of its life, not likely to last that much longer
anyway.

Well, clearly whoever it is has to be able to fill out
a tank top the way Doherty did, or Hewitt would.

Everything else is speculation until you know what the storyline
for replacement will be. My guess is they'll want someone younger
since the other two are approaching thirty and the show will
want to take the opportunity to hang onto the younger set. Maybe
a long lost cousin after Prue is killed, or maybe a spell which
changes her features/age/? Or maybe they'll just go the
Bewitche/Roseanne
route and just put in another actress and call her Prue and expect
the audience to adapt to it.

I'm a huge Charmed fan and so far, I haven;t heard of anyone who would fit
the bill in my eyes. It'd need to be someone without a mass fan base, so it
wouldn't overlap the show's core.

I think I'd actually watch it occasionally
if they cast Balk. She's nicely twisted.
