Peter Ustinov is also discussed. His great-grandfather married a daughter of
the Emperor of Ethiopia, nonetheless! The Solomonic dynasty that ruled
Ethiopia is traditionally said to descend from the illicit union of King
Solomon and the Queen of Sheba (take that claim with a grain of salt).
It's an interesting site and very informative.

I believe it was determined at one point that anywhere from 50-80% of
"white" Americans have at least some African-American ancestry--most of
it unknown for many reasons which, if you have any sense of history, are
obvious. Don't know of any in my own family, but since we've been
around (well, some parts of the family, anyway) since 1635, who knows?
Robin the mad photographer (who thinks that arguments along the lines of
"people aren't meant to do that" are silly, as the fact that humans
interbreed quite nicely indicates that God and/or the gene pool think
it's a Good Thing :-)

You're wrong again. Well over 50% of the whites in this country have
immigrated here since 1848 and it is fairly easy for them to trace there
ancestors back to the point of immigration. Irish and German descended folks
alone comprise over 50% of the white population and most of them can easily
trace their ancestry back to the point of immigration on both sides. Plus
ditto for the other immigrant groups. So much for your theory.
There is a lot of Black blood in the Lumbee
Indians but Heather didn't get any.

(snipped)
But Moors (negroes) were scattered throughout Europe and the British Isles
long before 1848. During the Renaissance Leonado Da Vinci's wealthiest
patron was a Moor (Lodovico the Moor). The French author Gabriel Colette
(_Gigi_) was descended from negro stock, despite her blonde hair and blue
eyes. The Russian poet Pushkin was a Moor, and the German composer
Beethoven was also frequently referred to as "a Moor" by his
contemporaries, though most modern Germans prefer to think this was merely
a nickname, and not a description. The British geneticist Steve Jones has
suggested Beethoven's remains be disinterred and DNA tested to settle the
point once and for all.
Actually Steve Jones's book _In the Blood: God, Genes and Destiny_ is
quite an interesting place to start reading up on the subject. One of the
most amusing things to emerge from that book was the data on Aryan Germans
- who share Hebrew ancestry with (what's left of) their Jewish neighbours.
As Jones points out, all it takes is one liason, several thousand years
ago. You can't argue with human leukucyte antigens, can you?
And to those of you who think you can discern ancestry by phenotype - the
genetic *appearance* of an individual - well, you're wrong. Phenotype
ain't necessarily genotype. My maternal grandmother was French Metis - 50%
Cree Indian, but she had blonde hair. My husband is part Maori - he had
blond hair as a child and looked every inch the white kid, some of his
siblings and cousins who shared precisely the same ratio of Maori and
white genes appeared very Maori indeed. You would not have believed they
were from the same race, let alone family. This is typical in genetics. So
I wouldn't look at Heather Locklear's white skin and blue eyes and dismiss
the idea of negro blood. I also wouldn't look at her pre-job nose and
conclude the breadth was a negro trait - remember the Somali, Ethiopian
and Kenyan people have very high bridged, narrow noses, and lots of snow
white Brits have the broad, flat noses of Celtic or Saxon origin. You
really can't tell much except by HLA typing.
